I've owned mine for about 13 months now. I have less than 17000km (about 10500 miles). I don't even really "daily" mine anymore. It's pretty much just a weekend car that I sometimes take on longer drives.

40-43 MPG on long (5-10hrs) trips with cruise control set at 65 or 70.....28 MPG around town (short 5 mile drives to work) in the summer and 27 MPG in the winter.

Winter blend fuel gives overall lower MPG. If you're letting the car warm up, your MPG calc goes down (wasted fuel without movement).
Check tire pressures and alignment. Check air filter to see if its dirty or clogged. Any exhaust issues? All these can add up to lost MPG. Also bad gas? |

~26mpg cruising on the highway means you need better control of your right foot and driving habits. The FR-S should easily get 30mpg average cruising @ 80-85mph...I can get 31mpg cruising @ 85mph on long trips between Texas and Utah in my MT FR-S... it's all about managing the throttle pedal and vehicle inertia/momentum...never slow down or brake unless absolutely needed, and don't use cruise control.
You need to be able to accelerate on downhill sections (while keeping above 30mpg average under acceleration) that lead to uphill sections..trading potential energy for the momentum to get you up the incline. And don't ever drop below 75mph going uphill...you loose that much rpm and it wastes a lot of fuel to get back to 80mph. I use the instantaneous mpg display as engine load indicator - you fine tune the pedal pressure to keep it reading as high as possible at all times. Keeping between 80-95mph while cruising is the goal; ideally you don't want drop below 80 at any time when climbing - trading built up speed for the push to get you up the incline (you will need to sacrifice 10-15mph), maximize speed going downhill to buildup the necessary potential energy for the following uphill section, and stick to 85 when things are relatively level. Helps to have 80mph speed limit. It's a fun game to time it just right to have your speed drop bottom out at 80mph right when making apogee...and keeping the instantaneous mpg reading as high as possible under all conditions. And I average 20-21mpg daily driving. All the mpg figures used are calculated based off distance and gallons used at the fuel pump...not what the car reads.

You will also lose the MPG if you are running stickier or large tires.

Sorry if that comes across as harsh, but people who can't maintain a constant speed on the highway are some of the most infuriating drivers on the road. Also, I don't know why you think you have to avoid cruise control to get good mileage. I set my cruise control to 78 MPH and I average 33 MPG. |

I do keep a pretty consistent speed using my foot though. Although highway traffic around here isnt real consistent anyway, I feel like cruise control would be useless. |

You definitely don't NEED to use it. It just helps maintain a constant speed. However it isn't hard to do that yourself. Just makes it easier. My favorite game to entertain myself in light traffic is the "try not to have to cancel the cruise control" game, lol.
