Looking to purchase a used FR-S (Modded vs. Stock) in GTA

Hey everyone, I'm from Toronto and I've been a lurker for sometime on the forums. It is finally time where I can finally and hopefully get a Scion FR-S. I'm currently considering two used options both in White colour & Manual and wondering which one would be better to get and how should I negotiate?

1) 2014 Scion FR-S Lightly Modded from Toyota Dealership (checked out & test driven and sounds amazing)

Price: $19,900 CAD Mileage: ~27,000 KMS

This Scion is somewhat lightly modded and here are the mods after checking out the car:
  • Amazing sounding aftermarket exhaust (I believe it is the Invidia N1 with Titanium Tips)
  • Aftermarket Front Strut Bar
  • HIDs
  • Aftermarket Intake + K&N Filter
  • Sound system/Speaker mods* Coilovers (not sure what brand, it is yellow)
  • 3 Advans RS II on Aoteli Tires with 1 Painted Black Stock Rim & Stock Tires
  • Comes not Certified or E-Tested because dealership doesn't certify modded cars
Overall, the car is in good condition with some scuffs in the interior (steering wheel & top of the dash - not sure if it can be fixed) and small crack and scuffs in the front bumper probably from bad parking or just hitting things since the car is lowered on coilovers). Test drove the car and it was pretty fun and exhaust was pretty loud and deep but I love the sound. I think I would have to fix up the car a bit, probably get new tires + 1 Advan Rim. I also want to know approximately how much I should negotiate since this isn't a stock car.

Here's the link for more info.

2) 2013 Scion FR-S Stock form Used Car Dealership (Haven't checked out yet)

Price: $16,880 Mileage: ~75,000KMS

From what I know the car is pretty much in stock condition but from the photos I can tell that there is a big bumper scuff in the front. Since I haven't checked out the car yet I don't know if it has mods to the engine but looks pretty stock.

Here's the link for more info.

I'm currently leaning on the first choice because of lower mileage and decent price but I would have to spend some money getting new tires which I'll probably do anyway. And if I do get a stock Scion FR-S I'll probably be doing similar mods to the first one so I might save money there. Let me know what you think and if you're in the GTA area and want to check out the cars with me that would be cool too!

Td;dr Looking to purchase a used Scion FR-S and considering 2 options with one being lightly modded and other looking stock, click the 'links' for more details on the cars.

I wouldn't buy the moded frs, it's assumed beaten, it has 3 rims out of 4, dealership doesn't know half the mods in there and they won't acknowledge the car for certify and most likely warranty down the road.

I would avoid any 2013-2014 car as well but primarily 2013 as there's a high chance of engine kinks and various other issues first year owner has.

I know I've been through a couple warranties on my car already and mine was a 2013 July built car.

Pay a few thousand more to get a piece of mind for the years to come, I know plenty of owners have been fed up with warranty work.

Definitely get a stock one. Buying a modded car is just buying someone else's headache.

The only kind of modded car I'd consider is an older one or a one with factory parts (ie TRD or STi)

I wonder if that dealership would part out the car parts. LOL

Wouldn't trust the first dealership, they can't even get the description right.

And the second seller has it listed as "euro pkg", dear lord. I've never heard of this trim lol

Personally, I wouldn't buy these cars used unless its bone stock or from a trusted forum member.

Clearly the first owner had a blast putting parts in the car, probably abused it and later found out its slow and in his mind a shit box and traded it in. I doubt he took care of the car.

I'd only buy a modded car if it was a private sale and the person is on a forum so you could research a bit more about the car.

I believe we have a member on here, bbknuckle who is selling his, you should check his out if its still available. Its on autotrader also last time I checked.

20,000 bucks and they won't certify it? I wouldn't bother with that one. I think the 2nd one you listed is over priced for now many km are on it. Truthfully, I'd consider looking at a new MY'14. You might surprise yourself and get a good deal since dealers are trying to make room for MY'16's.

Just a word of advice. Make absolutely sure that you get an independent mechanic to look over the car carefully. Modded cars are a huge gamble, you may not know about some other more specialized mods. I was suckered into buying a mazdaspeed 6 from a Mazda dealer in north east GTA that I thought only had an intake. After I bought it I brought it to a Mazdaspeed specialist because it was audibly detonating at high rpm... Not only did he show me how the intake wasn't what the dealer said, he also showed me that the Downpipe was catless... Huge no no on a stock tune, what's more the check engine light LED was pulled from the gauge cluster... I thought buying from an actual Mazda dealer gave me some level of protection, it doesn't. Find someone with a good rep here on the forum to buy off of or get one that is certified!
