Hit and run

When I got out of school, I saw that someone had hit and run me while my BRZ was parked. The police came and filed a report after I found their plates. I have a dashcam and immediately checked and got the person's plates. One of my friends knew the person after the cop gave a last name and gave me his number. What do I do now?

Call insurance, give them the report number and contact info and let them run with it from there. There is nothing else that you should personally do.

Surely could still report it as a crime? People should have further incentive to not "hit and run" other than the benefit of possibly being caught and having to pay for the damages that they should have paid for in the first place.

All this recent dashcam talk has really piqued my interest. Glad to hear that you have a lot of beneficial info on your side.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. Exactly what Tcoat said.

Are they not going after the person for hit and run? I'd ensure asses were had, there's literally no excuse for leaving without providing contact information.

I'm assuming they are but I have heard that if the person does not admit to the hit and run, it cannot be further perused since there is no evidence on who was actually driving.

Aside from that, can a truck running into my front left side damage the steering column? It felt a little bit twisted and the adjuster also felt weird.

Well if it hit hard enough to twist the steering column then the car would be totally undrivable since it would be in pieces. If you mean it feels weird while driving then it could be alignment or suspension damage. If this is the case park it right now and call a tow truck.
How bad was the damage?

Hit and run is a misdemeanor. Filing a proper police report and pressing charges will ultimately result in the involvement of insurance companies and you will be made whole.

Yet another save by a dashcam, suddenly a gopro for canyon runs is entirely insufficient!

The steering column itself is not straight, but I don't know if that's just how it is normally. I have some pictures here.

Well now that is just bizarre! I would say it was totally impossible for that small a hit (I know it seems huge but it isn't) to do that to the column but there it is in full living pictures. That makes no sense to me at all but I would not be driving it until checked. Probably just the cover shifted but the big questions are how and why.

That last picture reminded me immediately of this:

Unfortunately, that OP never updated us on what happened.

You should definitely get your alignment checked, and have them inspect the steering assembly as well.
