Tomei headers - why no cat?
Hi All.
So I've been in the market for some new headers down here in Australia, and the Tomei UEL sounds amazing to me. The only problem is that it is catless. Laws where I live in Australia are quite strict about emissions and removing cats. It would be most defiantly illegal if I put a set on my BRZ. So i guess my question is, why has Tomei not released a catted version of their UEL header? Also, does anyone know of a similar sounding header with a cat? Cheers! |

Adding a catted header without a tune any gain will be very small. Even a catless header without tunes gains are small. Their are very few catted headers for these cars as gains are less and cost is generally higher due cost of cat. eg http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/ft86...l#.Voti89IrKAk https://jdlautodesign.net/shop/ft86-...length-header/ I believe the fine is big for having No cats at all but if you leave the second cat in system, the one in front pipe you should avoid that problem. Just be prepared to swap back the stock header for a test. a good option in australia is the PSR header/ovepipe combo. http://www.prospeedracing.com.au/pro...scion-frs.html you going to need a tune or an o2 spacer to stop the P0420 CEL see the Basic bolt on Mods guide link below |

Another thing that I have seen is, due to spacing it would be pretty difficult to get a rumbly uel header to fit a cat in before the overpipe connection, there simply wouldn't be space. All of the catted uel headers really aren't very uel.

OP if you want a need trick to pass a visual inspection (if you guys have those) is to gut your OEM cat. You get almost the same gains as a aftermarket header and it looks OEM. You will get a CEL if you don't tune it and fail smog tests but its free?? Wont be UEL though.

Cost.
It makes the product more expensive without any gains (other than satisfying a requirement to have a catalytic converter), and without actually being tested by your local smog agency it's pretty useless. -alex |

Tomei don't give a f*ck. That's why. Jkjk, they are very performance oriented and cats don't meet that standard, and the above mentioned cost. It's illegal here too but unless you have inspections, no one knows

Tomei is already priced very competitively for a full titanium set-up, so again the fact that they don't offer a catted version of their header(s) doesn't surprise me. Perhaps you could look into a tune along with a Tomei header to trick the engine from firing any codes? I'm not sure how helpful that would be to you, and I'm going to assume you've already considered this option; technically removing the cat in the header is illegal in most places in the United States as well, but the authorities are probably stricter about that stuff where you are. JDL has introduced a catted version of their UEL as of last year I believe - personally, I'm looking into this option as well for the sake of eliminating some of the torque dip, while not having to worry about dealing with emissions, etc. I inquired with Jesse at JDL with regards to their catted UEL awhile back, and he told me that the catted version of their UEL will only yield a difference of 5 peak HP at most over that of their uncatted version, so take that for what you will. |

You live in Australia. Isn't it almost illegal to even drive a car there now?

I guess I never thought of it like how you've all been describing it. It makes sense then.

But in all seriousness, I wouldn't be surprised. The way the Governments are ruining driving is astounding. |
