There is a lot of misinterpretation and overreaction going on in this thread. These things are not as simple as everyone wants them to be. I would say my opinion, but someone would overreact and flame me over it without adding any value to the discussion.

That said, I always tip, even if service isn't great.

It would help if you would quote the people you're talking about, because skimming back over the thread, I can't find it.
My statements were very deliberately paraphrased and summarized what had been said (or my understanding of what was said) in order to make my point without singling out any individuals. Having now read the whole thread I see that it has just turned to the standard name calling, pissing match filled with personal attacks of which I was trying to stay out of.
I stand by my previous comments.

So you're generalizing and simplifying, which is basically what you're criticizing other people for doing.

The thread did turn into a bit of a confusing shitstorm and there were some pretty insensitive sounding comments.

I maintain that my point remains we have no power over the harsh realities of life. All we can do is our best to navigate.

1. Do unto others...
2. Judge not...

If referring to my lack of specifics done in order to keep from turning the debate into a personal pissing contest, then yes I am.
I do not feel that I was criticizing anybody for generalizing or simplifying anyway as many of the statements that I was referencing appear to be very specific and uncompromising.

I have made my points and you can take or leave them as you wish but the fact remains this whole thread is just foolish and destroyed yet another little part in my faith in the goodness of the human race.

Out.

And yet by not being specific, it's impossible to tell to whom you're referring. The people you're talking about may not realize it, and people you're not talking about may think you're referring to them.

Regarding generalization, I thought you were criticizing people for making sweeping, general statements about getting ahead in life and oversimplifying the process by which that happens without considering the individual's circumstances.

Why? We have people in this thread who are very sympathetic to the plight of the poor and want to help them. We have people in this thread who are very optimistic about the opportunities available out there for those people. Optimism and empathy are generally considered good qualities.

I use wikidepia a lot to get some basic information on a subject.
If I need more information, I dig deeper using peer reviewed papers on the subject.

What?, is the periodic table on wikipedia somehow inferior to a periodic table found elsewhere?
If I want to know the population of a particular city, I should NOT believe wikipedia?

Get over yourself.

The point of the above post was "Duh econimics - 'its simple enough that you could learn this point from wikipedia'"

I was about to take you seriously, then I saw your name and it all made sense.

I don't know if you've been reading anything I've been typing to this shaky guy, but if you seriously take any of my points other than the first two posts I've made in this thread to heart, you're doing the Internet wrong, bro.

I am going to get the last word in this thread if it means selling all of my Vanguard ETFs, dropping out of my STEM program, and getting a job as a line cook.

Someone said I should go to college and I did. 2 years after that, not saying specific numbers, I'm making much, much more than I did before.

So I pretty much agree with Extra. The Dream does exist, you just have to endure and want to get there (picking a STEM field does help!)
Mine is a similar story. Out of HS, I was an Iron Worker, so I made very good money but it was REALLY hard work and sometimes in harsh winter weather (not to mention VERY dangerous back in the 80-90s).
I chose to go to college for Electrical Engineering.
So I would work a semester & save up money, and go back to school for a semester, etc, etc.
It took me 8 years to get my BSEE that way, but now I make >$160k after 20 years in the industry.

Long story short - Go to college!!! I am so sick of the people convincing kids these days "you dont need to go to college".
The kids all interpret this to mean - "You dont need to get an education any further than HS" that is such BS!!

And for those that want to complain - "Waaaa... I couldnt go to college I had a family to take care of"
Well, keep your junk to yourself until you are capable of supporting a family and you wouldnt have that problem.

They DO know what causes babies:
