Oh and also you want to do all this very quickly. The point is to get your clutch, your flywheel, and your gears all moving at the same speed as your wheels. After you rev, in that tiny moment before you shift into the next gear, your clutch and flywheel will already be slowing down again.

None of this is really a big deal though, as far as wear and tear. So don't worry about not doing it, or making the car jerk around while you're learning. It's not going to hurt anything. But once you learn to do it, if you do it forever, that's tens of thousands of times over a long enough timeline. In the long run it'll actually save you a bit of wear and tear.

Mostly it's just fun though. And sounds cool. And makes shifting really smooth.

Say you're at 3,000 RPMs in 5th gear, but you want to go to 4th. If you were already in 4th gear at your current speed, we'll say that would be 4,000 RPMs. So... ideally... you would:

2. Shift to neutral
3. Left off of the clutch pedal
4. Rev up to 4,000 RPMs
5. Push in the clutch pedal
6. Shift to 4th
7. Let off of the clutch pedal

That'll save your synchros, your clutch, and just be a cool thing to do. It takes practice, but not as much as you might expect from my 7 step instructions.

There's no need to double clutch. Regular ole revmatching has always worked just fine on synchronized transmissions.

Oh, and just so my first post to this thread of win isn't completely off-topic, I tend to downshift coming off the freeway and neutral roll on side/city streets. Getting the rev-match right on a downshift is quite satisfying, I have to say.

So wait, do all of you who downshift while slowing down do it using heel toe? Or do you guys just let of the brake really quickly to blip the throttle to rev match..?
