Technically they can suggest whatever the hell they want, that's why its a suggestion, "Based off the mileage", I think they say every 15k you can do a fuel system cleaning/throttle body service.

When i was a tech that was an easy thing to sell on cars that didn't need any major work or needed nothing at all. And you can do it and walk away and work on another car. Or what most techs do is just throw it in the trash and not do anything to your car sadly I've seen it happen numerous times. I am out of the automotive field and a big part of that was because we had to rip customers off and up-sell them just to get a decent pay check, unfortunately.

But...

At the same time telling him that his "throttle will stick" due to build up is just as dishonest. Not only that but it shows a deep lack of knowledge on how these cars even work since he apparently didn't know it is drive by wire with no throttle linkage to jamb up.

No matter how the valve is actuated I can see it sticking over time.

My 25 year old pickup truck with 205,000 miles on it had a throttle valve I wouldn't mind eating off of, I doubt it was ever cleaned, certainly not in my 5 year 25,000 miles of ownership.

Edit: I guess throttle cleaning has changed over time from cleaning the cable and actuator to cleaning the interior of the body, sticky throttle is usually attributed to the linkage which on older cars needs regular maintenance vs. newer cars electronic bodies that probably aren't able to be serviced at all.

The valve can stick yes, but if that clogged up you would probably have other symptoms well before that happened.

Besides:
The OP was told "I have a lot of carbon buildup on my throttle body and if I don't clean it my gas pedal will stick.

I've read round the internets from a mechanic that they usually fix carbon buildup by driving the car, hard. Typically people baby their car but once in a while it needs to be opened up to clean out the carbon.

Not sure if it's true or not being the internet.

I will say one thing I see quite a bit that you may not know, is when people almost exclusively take short trips, never allowing their vehicles to get up to temp, and always babying their car. ESPECIALLY direct injection engines. It's important for your vehicle to get up to operating temperature, and also for you to flog it from time to time. Failure to do so will result in large amounts of carbon deposits on your intake valves. Carbon deposits can build to the point where your car will not run correctly. This can be dealt with by driving the hell out if it from time to time. Some customers end up paying us good money to take their car out for them, and beat the hell out of it, knocking the carbon off the valves. If it's too bad, we have to take off the intake and clean them manually. Happens about once a week.

I've had enough legal issues not go my way that I don't leave it to chance. Really I would have bought used and saved money and avoided the warranty situation, but after already waiting years for the car to come out I wasn't about to wait several more.

Leave what to chance? If you go to a decent 3rd party mechanic that you can trust and is properly certified, there is ZERO ISSUE with warranty coverage.

If I didn't take it to the dealer I'd do the work myself. Why would I pay a 3rd party mechanic.
