Toyota Advances D4S With Self-Cleaning Feature...
Quick question guys.
The 2015/2016 Tacoma has a D4S system (direct injection system) that cleans its own injectors. My question is: do the 2015+ FR-S also have it? Or... is this a Tacoma only thing? I read the manual a bit and didn't see anything regarding this. Just read the part it says to not use fuel additives...etc. J/W

hmmmm......... I scraped this off the Internet ..........( which makes it FACT ....
)However, it sounds about right to me. "Nothing new, all of Toyota's D4D engines have this. The "self cleaning" is simply the engine switching between direct and port injection depending on what's optimal? As a side affect by going into the port injection system it helps clean some of the excess carbon build up left by the direct injection." humfrz |

Technically I think this goes for any engine that is equipped with the new 2GR-FKS engine...
EDIT: I think humfrz's post is worth heeding. |

@humfrz is spot on. My last car was direct injection only, and those valves were prone to getting pretty carbon fouled. The port injection takes care of that in our cars.

While we are on the subject of Tacomas, I think that the new 3.5L V6, or at least the version of the 2GR-FKS used in the new GS, is a worthy swap for a twin.

That's supposedly Mazda's solution, they design the engine to keep the intake valves hot. There is some doubt if this is actually true as the original solution is somewhat less than official, but the sentiment is echoed in other DI Engined communities.
Article on SkyActiv: http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticl...echnology.aspx http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63212 http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...1#post60051379 http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?p=146579 It's kind of funny to see people balk at the idea of keeping an engine over 4,000 rpm for a sustained period or bitch about gas prices. Whether it's real or not, I don't really need an excuse to ensure my FA20 sees a handful of redline shifts per week and some sustained high rpm spirited driving on a monthly basis. Edit: Yes supposedly D4-S combats buildup via the port injectors but has been this way by design since introduction 9+ years ago. |
