Summer Tires, Texas Winters

Hey guys,

Last winter I had the stock tires and a stock engine. It drove fine. But this winter I'm sporting more power and PSS summer tires. I'll be upgrading my wheels soon and was curious if I should get all-seasons or stick with summer tires. I know the winters here in Texas don't get that cold, but I've read it's not wise to drive summers in temperatures below 40 or 50 degrees. Any tips or recommendations on tires would be much appreciated!

It's not that it's necessarily unwise to run summer tires in colder temps, it's just that the compound won't be as sticky and you can't expect the same level of traction unless you can get some heat into them. If you're sticking with one set of wheels and tires, all seasons are good for just a DD, but if you track your car on one set of summer tires I'd just drive carefully on the street. I drive on summer tires in 30 to 50 degree dry weather on summer tires all the time, I just adjust my driving habits accordingly.

My car is a DD but I don't plan on changing back and forth. If it doesn't cause extra ware then I can simply adjust my driving for a few months. Thanks for the input!

Take it slow for the first few minutes with summers. By that, just drive a few miles so your tyres are a bit stretched and warmed up. I rock summers and I know how easy it is to just go "wee" around a corner especially when it's your first turn.

Edit: I need to add that my traction control/vehicle stability control is usually off.

I drive on summer performance tires all year round and haven't had any problems. Of course in inclement ice storms weather the BRZ doesn't leave the garage though.
