With snow tires I think the big problem will not be traction, but the height of the vehicle. My previous car was lowered (nothing outrageous just 1 finger gap front and rear) and with snow tires I never got stuck but I tore my front bumper on one occasion and ripped the flexible wrapping around the flex pipe. So with this car I'm not going to drive it in more than a few inches, I'll just borrow car from mom or sister.

I agree. I'm much more worried about ground clearance for snow rather than traction.

Looks like the BRZ ground clearance is 4.9 inches while the current Legacy is 5.9 inches. I guess number wise its not much but in real life it is. Better save my PTO time then for those bad days...

lol my jobs issue alerts when there is bad weather and you are not allowed to call out unless you have a documented emergency. But this area we average probably 1 or 2 big snows a season so I think the BRZ will be OK

My company's policy is if the major school next to our building is closed, we can remote in and do work from home...how I love technology!

I drove my 93 Mustang GT in Ithaca, NY in many bad winters. Obviously I couldn't move at all with summer tires but the car handled amazingly well once I threw some snow tires on. I suppose I'll do that with the BRZ too, but like others, I'm more worried about clearance and what the salt on the road will do to the beautifulness.

The only thing you guys might worry about a little is how light the BRZ is compared to heavier RWD sports cars which do OK in snow. Might be a factor?

i'm worrying about the winter too. I used to have a 7th gen civic si(no tc, no lsd, no nothing), and in the winter(talking about Canadian winter) i never put any winter tires on. But for my brz, i will get her a set of decent winter tires, and i think it will be ok since i normally do a lot city driving.

As far as traction is concerned, heavier is always better. It's easier for the tires to crunch through loose snow. Skinny tires will also help because they have less surface area so more of the weight is in one spot. Don't listen to people saying wider tires are better in the snow. It's absolutely false, and in fact the other way around.

OP, last year I was in a similar situation as you were. I was strongly advised by my father to buy a car with all wheel drive because of the winter months. Then, the FRS/BRZ was off my list. The only cars that I considered were BMW 3 series coupe, Audi A5 coupe, Audi TT, Acura TL, or G37 coupe. Those cars were very costly though. I could afford it if I wait longer, but I kept thinking about the opportunity cost. Afterwards, the FRS/BRZ came back into the picture. I thought to myself, there is no point in me sacrificing all of my fun because of 4-5 months of snow. If last winter was any indication, snow does not fall every single day within those couple of months. Plus, the more people around me continue to preach rear-wheel drive is bad for winter, the more I take it as a challenge. I will be putting snow tires on my BRZ if I decide not to have a dedicated winter beater.
I share thoughts with other posters, I am more concern about ground clearance than traction. My 1996 Subaru legacy cannot get over several inches of snow. This is especially important when the roads has not been cleared yet and you need to get to work. My mom's Rav4 on the other hand is a beast. It goes over anything--snow, dead bodies, you name it! |
