FA20: Twin or Quad Cam?

So this debate originally sparked from a vinyl design I'm going to be doing in the spring.

Is the Toyobaru engine a twin cam or quad cam? It IS a DOHC that requires two cams to operate the valves. However, it technically has four cams.

I know that it's really just semantics, you could call it either, but I'm curious to hear people's opinions.

Twin overhead cams.

You count number of cams over a single cylinder.

It's a quad cam DOHC motor. Quad cam just refers to a DOHC motor with two cylinder banks.

It's funny because some old Subaru marketing literature called it a "Quad Cam" motor, but everything recent they call them DOHC motors. There just happens to be two cylinder heads.

Well Quad Cam motors are still DOHC, it's just counted by the total number of cams in the system.

I don't necessarily think there's a right or wrong answer to this. It's a matter of how you look at the system. It's a twin cam in that in order to operate the valves you need two cams, but it's a quad cam if you look at the total number of cams required to make the engine run. In the end it's all semantics and marketing tactics.

The reason I bring this up is because I'm planning to do a vinyl in the spring that's a throwback to the AE86 GT-S factory vinyl:

And I'm decided for the phrasing if I should go with "FR-S TWIN CAM 16"

or "FR-S QUAD CAM 16"

I didn't want to post this part in the OP, because it kinda makes this a thread more for the Exterior section. But since we're debating about the engine, I think I'm in the right place. haha

Well there are other V-engines where two cams are used in each bank of cylinder heads and are referred to as "quad cam" motors.

Another example would be you could say a car has a four valve head, or you can say that the engine is a 16 valve.

Both are correct. Just two ways of referring to the same thing.

Just keep in mind what I said.

Twin overhead cams.

Each cylinder head holds two cams that are over the cylinders.

If you want to say there's quad cams, you won't say "quad overhead cams" as that suggests there's 4 overhead cams on each cylinder, you'd just refer to it as "quad cam engine".

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that there are different ways that people phrase it. Basically trying to play devil's advocate.

Meh, it's a little bit of vinyl that my buddy will cut at cost. So it'll cost me barely anything, and is easy to remove if I don't like the look.

I've got a set of 17x8 +35 RS Watanabe F8s on the way, that will be here in the spring.

That's just a photoshop my buddy did to give a very rough idea of what it will look like. The ones I ordered are actually 5x100, my buddy just grabbed a shot off the internet to use in the photoshop. haha
