That's good.

However, after many life experiences ..... I more and more buy into the old phrase:

I also figured that oil changes are so straightforward, there's nothing that could go wrong by leaving it to a shop.

I stand corrected.

Thats crazy. So crazy it might work!

Going to work soon, will update if the car survive.

It stands to be noted that it was not the dealer that screwed this up. He had the oil changed elsewhere and took it to the dealer after the incident.
Although it seems inexcusable, this is the sort of screw up that can and does happen all the time. Even to the "I do all my own work because everybody else in the world is an idiot" crowd. Anybody here could have missed that piece and it is not just restricted to "garage monkeys". Now I would hope that the DIY group would use the proper tools but would have expected that from a reputable garage as well.

I admit I chose not to make that correction partly because I have a chip on my shoulder.

Still, I have a beef with the dealer who shined on the OP's concern. Glad for him it's a leased car.

I chose to ignore that aspect because dealers get a bad rap and that sort of thing doesn't help their image any. But they didn't screw it up in the first place so shouldn't go down for that.

Well, I DID ask them to inspect and take any measure they deem necessary to make sure everything was fine....

Yep. I am not defending their actions with the follow up just that they didn't screw up the oil change like so many seem to think.

Thanks for the correction. That's my mistake.

My point still stands though. I'll do the oil changes myself before I let some lube tech, Jiffy Lube, reputable garage, or Toyota, work on my car. Though, I do understand that mistakes happen and anyone could wreck someone's engine because they missed one detail. I'll still do my own work even if I'm the one who screws up. At least then I know that the damaged engine is a result of honest mistakes rather than lazy or stupid tactics (i.e. the hole-punched filter.)

Record dates and mileage at times of service. Keep all your receipts.

Yep yep yep yep! I was going to buy an organizer for all the work I do to my car.

Also, I need to work on my reading comprehension just a bit.

I rip the top off of the new oil filter box, record the date and mileage, and staple the oil receipt to it. Then I just shove it in my owner's manual bag.

That's a mistake. A second set of eyes to verify work performed is an essential part of any quality assurance process.

Everyone, you, I, your mechanic, has their moments. That's part of being human. Verification is not personal, it's just smart.
