Yep. The second best check is the oil, to see if there's metal in the oil and getting it analyzed. The ECU can't tell when there is a bearing failure.

Funny he's worried about a month or two lol, I'm pretty sure you'd have issues inside a week if that didn't get fixed.

Yeah, I smell bullshit on their explanation as well. Sounds like they didn't want to put the effort to really do a thorough inspection. When I took the car in, they said they might have to do an oil change (to inspect the oil for metal), but looking at my invoice now, they changed the filter only and called it a day.

I have to go to the first garage tomorrow (getting a refund for what toyota charged me), I'll try to get a written note of how they messed up. That way if something happens in a year or two I can get back to them.

This suck, I was on the fence about buying the car at the end of the lease, but now its not really an option anymore.

edit ; the idea to do some redline pulls to see if everything is fine, that was sarcasm, right?

Jesus fucking christ. After having read that, I'm even more inclined to do my own oil changes myself, 5 free oil changes be damned. I'll gladly shell out some bucks and have a good working engine than have some lube tech fuck something up and worse, intentionally cover it up.

Nope. If it survives, you're good. Spin a bearing? At least it didn't happen in the middle of a road trip. Gets fixed sooner than later.

My neighbor does his oil changes in his driveway. I always wondered why! I thought that was a waste of time. Oil changes aren't that expensive, if you take into account the price of the oil + filter, you're not saving much by doing it yourself! I also figured that oil changes are so straightforward, there's nothing that could go wrong by leaving it to a shop.

I stand corrected.

It's something a normally functioning engine would have no problem doing. If a bearing gets spun during that, then something was wrong to begin with, so it's a pretty good way to check, despite the potentially destructive nature

I've read so many horror stories fucking up even the most basic of things. It doesn't give me much confidence to take my own FR-S in if they cannot even handle an oil change. Hopefully the dealer will do right by you.

If it fails, even though you did absolutely nothing wrong, remember to play dumb.

No one has ever touched my ride. Ever.

Except for alignments. Even then, I'm watching like a hawk.

Looks like I have something else to add to my list of things to do, before I leave the establishment, after I have the oil changed:

* check under the car for drips

* check the oil level ...... and for "newness", on the dipstick

* check for my "mark" on the filter, to make sure the filter was changed

* check filter for tightness and for leaks

* check to make sure the oil filler cap has been replaced

* NOW, since the filter is up top ...... take it off and look for any extra pieces

Why don't I just change the oil/filter myself ???......

I finally know how this whole mess happened!

I had a talk with the manager of the first shop. I was really curious about how a valve could even get in there. He told me that when they do cars with the filter on top (just like the FRS), they punch a hole in the filter so the oil can drain.

This relieve the oil pressure inside the filter (making it easier to unscrew), and also draining the oil in the filter prevent messes. They always do it that way when the filter is on top.

So, when they punched the filter, thats probably when the valve "fell".

The guy assured me they won't do this trick anymore.

pardon my ignorance but what is newness on a dipstick?

* check for my "mark" on the filter, to make sure the filter was changed (great idea tbh)

* check filter for tightness and for leaks

* check to make sure the oil filler cap has been replaced (wait you change the filler cap every oil change? Thought it should only be done when seal is worn? Am I a bad car owner lol?

* NOW, since the filter is up top ...... take it off and look for any extra pieces

What a fucking stupid ass policy for any shop to willingly do as part of a routine for top mounted filters. Literally makes zero sense any way you look at it. Howabout using a properly sized oil filter cap socket/wrench if the filter was overtightened previously? Relieving oil pressure and draining the oil that's left in the filter? Again, makes no fucking sense. There's never any mess when I just unscrew it by hand and remove it. Fuck this shop.

At least this jackass is basically admitting fault for this fuckup. Hope you can get him to cover the cost of any damage done to your engine by his idiotic oil filter removal methods.
