My father enjoyed riding in my GT86. He drove a lot of different vehicles in his life. He was an army officer in a transport division and later spent many years surveying. Anyway, I asked him once if he'd like to drive my car. He said "I've never driven an automatic and I don't feel like learning it now".

On more than one occasion driving an automatic, I've locked up the brakes with my left foot stabbing at an imaginary clutch. Haven't done it in many years but still, the damn brake pedal doesn't need to be any wider. Just leave an empty space there, FFS.

Every single time I start the wife's car I punch the missing clutch. Only locked up the brakes once though.

I had to give someone a ride in their automatic after they had too much to drink.
I hit the brakes so hard they hit their head on the dash.

(I do love this automatic gearbox, though. In "sport" it shifts more aggressively than I would do with a manual.)

But I did believe that the US population generally preferred AT over MT and that "driving stick" was regarded as antiquated and very tedious to learn.

I'd also have one myself if it weren't for sitting in downtown Seattle traffic. Ugh.

Anyhoo, went down to the basement at work to get some R&R. One of the guys from the cleaning crew was checking out the car. Guess he didn't care for the Porsche that's right next to it?

I've always driven manual in traffic. You get used to it.
