No, they have shields, although it seems a little sporadic in use depending on the plot point that needed to me made at the time.

Yeah but aren't the " sheilds " generated on endore or whatever that plant with the cute midget wookies was?? So if they aren't near a planet then they are f*cked. I need to go watch starwars again its been way to long.

I believe it was more than just s shield generator. it also worked to stabilize orbit and hold the Death Star during firing.

At the link it goes into pretty heavy detail on the different shields the ships have, although they seem to be more about energy weapons than physical weapons.
What they don't have are transporters though, so the proton weapon beamed aboard would be a real threat.
