New Mazda RX-Vision Concept Looks Into The Rotary’s Future

Quote:
Mazda is taking a glimpse into the future of its RX sports car family with the RX-VISION Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.

A modern-day RX-7, you say? Well, that’s what we think too, but for now, it’s just a concept and nothing more with the Japanese brand stating that it “represents a vision of the future that Mazda hopes to one day make into reality; a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car” with “KODO design-based proportions” that’s powered by the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine”.

It’s a striking looking car with a protracted hood, a stubby rear and very short overhangs that measures 4,389mm long, 1,925mm wide and 1,160mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,700mm, making it shorter, wider and lower than Mazda’s last rotary-powered model, the RX-8. A set of 20-inch black wheels on 245/40R20 and 285/35R20 tires front and rear respectively further enhance its stance.

The interior of the RX-VISION is kept simple with a few retro hints like the deep steering wheel and the analogue instrument dials, ditching most amenities we’ve come to expect from, pretty much, any car these days, to save weight, and that even includes the door handles that have been replaced with leather straps.

The LFA is no longer in production, and even when it was, it's cost more than a supercar $350k

While the NSX is a bit up there, it's still cheap enough that some of the higher end tuning shops might play with it a bit (namely Liberty Walk). because the LFA was a limited run and so expensive it has no after market support.

If we go back to the 90's the Skyline GT-R, NSX, Supra, and RX-7 all have massive following and we've seen countless builds. Now it's a bit early to say if the new NSX will be that popular. But considering it and the GT-R aren't priced like you have to own an Saudi Oil Field in order to buy one i think all the new NSX needs is time.

The FT-1 looks like it will be a true Supra successor so you know it won't take long for the aftermarket to begin developing for it. and same with the RX-Vision

now all Toyota and Mazda have to do is make their respective cars.

I think this will be the first time where the concept will look worse than the actual production model if it ever gets there.

I like the proportions of the car and how simple the interior is. I hope the production run is similar...and that the Skydrive-R isn't gutless...

i hope they go more up market with the rx-vision like the GT-R and make it a vette/911 fighter, although that would put it firmly out of reach for me. make it a 3 rotor!

I think it's a perspective trick because the concept is smaller than the old RX-8:

RX8 LxWxH
175.9; 69.7; 52.8 wheelbase 106.41

RX-VISION LxWxH
172.7; 75.7; 45.6 wheelbase 106.29

I heard that the RX-VISION is using a rear-wheel drive variant of the Mazda 6 chassis.

Is there any truth to this?

Speed Hunter's now has their pictures up: http://www.speedhunters.com/2015/10/...cept-revealed/

I'm not sure how I feel. It doesn't really have anything that pulls from what I love about the RX series. My initial impression was a toyboru with a stretched front end... which isn't what I want in my Mazda. I am a bit disappointed they didn't try to bring back pop-ups.

While I would've loved that, they clear where inspired by them with the units they put on the concept car.

I don't like the squished greenhouse (could be a concept car thing) and the resultant slanted A pillar. It also seems to be missing a 3rd pedal.

First impressions were the proportions were off with the super long hood. But from this angle it looks great.

Low, wide, aggressive and refined. I love these views, although not sure how I feel about the 'R-magic'-esque vents on the bottom.

The rear is the least interesting to me, although I'm glad to see them use the dual circle tail lights. Wish the deck lid was a little longer. Curious to see what a lip spoiler might do for it.

It's a concept thing. There's no way it's only going to be 45.6 inches high in production form. Think of it like the overly stylistic Scion FRS concept.

We can't tell anything concrete from the reveal except general styling cues and it'll be a new sky-active rotary. Everything else is a guess.
