I wonder if it being Skyactiv will make it more reliable. I really don't want to discount a Mazda sports car just because of it's engine, but I'm also not the most mechanically inclined person. Rotary makes me nervous.

Secondly, "reliable" is a interesting term to use here. The Wankel engines used in the RX-7 and 8 (in fact, all the way back to the 3) only had 3 moving parts, as opposed to the hundreds in a standard reciprocal engine (I'm going from memory here, so I apologize if I get something wrong). As it goes, the less moving parts, the more consistent something would be (and why you could rev rotaries to 9k without too many issues). The problem before was the seals giving out around the 100k mark, which essentially required an engine rebuild. When my dad had his RX-8, the biggest problems he had with the car was the occasional flooding (user-caused) and oil consumption (which was normal for the Renesis 13b). The only reason he got rid of it was because he was approaching the 100k mark and didn't want to deal with the cost of a seal replacement. If Mazda has engineered a way around the seal issue, or have a new way of handling this situation, they will have a massive hit on their hands. |

That's exciting news. I hope they make it the new Supra price range. Not the new NSX price range. Maybe then I can afford one by the time I retire... :p
