That is for the repair. Does it apply to diagnostic work as well? Pretty hard to estimate how long it will take to figure out what is wrong.

Not all. If I could remember the dude's name I would have posted the thread since he got taken to the cleaners with a blown engine. The other one I know paid huge for a diagnostic tear down had the thread pulled because he was headed down the legal road.

Ok so if adding some pissy LED's can fry the BCM (Whatever that stands for!) then what areas of the wiring are safe to dabble with. I added some gauges and tapped in to an unused fuse in the fuse block under the dash to power them. Does that put me at risk of frying my BCM at some stage? What about the Tach wire I've tapped in to run a shift point indicator? Is this just related to the fitting/changing of LED lights? The bill for the OP could realistically add up to thousands!!

I wonder how the Body ECU can cause this when the steering lock actuator is not connected to it.

Yes, it would apply to diagnostic work as well.

Other than electrical diagnosis, where you're just checking where current is or isn't and what relays work, diagnosis usually involves removing and disassembling things.

So the shop would have to call the owner and tell him to continue the diagnostic steps they will have to remove the head, timing chain cover, or whatever and quote the owner a price for that.

Sorry it took so long to respond, I finally received the car back last week. New BCM/BIU and had to have the steering lock replaced l, I was told it was stripped due to me "banging the wheel off the locks"

Because the Certification ECU needs a CAN signal from the BCM.

But on the cars with an actual key, the steering lock is actuated by a mechanical linkage. You will be able to unlock the wheel. Not able to do much else, but...
