Mines just went today also. Luckily I found another motor so no downtime while I repair this one. I am going to call element tuning on Monday to see what they can do for me. I don't understand the whole swedge thing. Note that I had misfire issues and P0301 codes before this happened. I would make a pull and the car would hesitate at high RPMS and the CEL would flash momentarily. Well this morning when I went to my trusted mechanic we changed the coil packs and the spark plugs out hoping it would cure the misfiring (not knowing about this rocker failure), after he put the new plug in we took it on track and big puff of white smoke came from the car. I thought it was a piston melted. When we put it up on the lift we saw the hole in the valve cover. So more researching and I found this recent thread. This sucks that some of us are unlucky like this. I hope my recently bought motor doesn't do this either.

@DaiTT500: sorry to hear about your motor. Was this on your JRSC stock pulley on e85? Do you or others think we should 'preventively' fix these rocker arms when FI'ed?

Yes it was on my stock pulley e85 but I think this could have happen to my motor if it was NA. I think it's poor quality control on them. I think this is a small case but not sure.

Seems there might be a market for quality rockers. Wish someone would jump on that.

The engine is out.

The Carnage:

Some Disassembly Acquired

It took a big bite out of the head along with nibbles here and there.

The lifter hiding in shame

I'm blaming this guy, and you'll see why later. There was scarring along the side of the lifter, but I can't be sure if it was the cause or result of the failure.

The home of the lifter

It's difficult to see, but there is damage around the lip of the hole.

Dun-dun-DAA! The Rocker

Note the pin, while starting to walk, is still in place. The roller spins freely too.

I have two theories.

1. The lifter failed somehow. Either it somehow wasn't supplied oil (there are no other signs of oil starvation in the head) or it somehow bound up in its seat. This let it retract into the head far enough to let the rocker come free.

2. The walking pin in the rocker allowed the roller to bind up and overheat, locking the roller. But the roller isn't discolored like it would be if it overheated, and the cam doesn't show signs of that it was grinding against a stuck roller.

I'm leaning towards #1, a lifter failure of some sort, as the cause.

The question now becomes. How do we prevent this from happening again? And is it worth doing, or would it be more practical to just get a replacement head and hope it doesn't happen again? I love this car, and the last weekend I had it it was brilliant. But I wonder if an outside observer would think it unwise to stick with this car...

Similar destruction but not as bad as yours. My lifter shot out of the valve cover I think. I could not find it.

Since its not so bad, I am rebuilding the whole motor with stronger parts.

Have you found better rockers / lifters? I've been coming up empty handed.

Pop goes the BRZ. Advice please.

I've talk to the big engine builders for FA20 and they said stock does fine. It's the springs that aren't tensioner enough that lets this all happen. Replacing it with a set of better valve springs will prevent this.

Interesting. If that's the case, then a good set of springs and new set of rockers (to cherry-pick the best set) are in order.

When you have the springs out for upgrades, can you take a pictures of the springs tension weight? 55? Thinking we're seeing valve float and piston kissing. After the piston kissed the valve the valve divorces the rocker.

Has these springs been updated in the 2016 version of the FRS?

Just springs should be enough. If you're going that route go for the beehive version of GSC. They are lighter and stronger and should help keep those rockers from getting banged up to 8k+.

Do you have a part number? I see two sets from GSC, but I didn't notice a mention of beehive.

Also, I'm still at the stock redvline. Any downsides I should be knowledgeable about?

Thanks.
