^^^this.... but yes there is also a local company I deal with named Motiva that does everything from alignments to full custom fabricated race/turbo builds. there are several other tuning shops around town too, but I don't think any deal with ecutek. you can always rent the dyno and have fa20club or whoever do a remote tune too in real time
motiva? is that on eubank near constitution? and the entire tuning thing is a mind trip for me... ecuteck with cable bla bla bla. do i plug the usb in my computer and download to car? idk where to even begin if i got a tune

Tuning yourself with BRZedit etc is complicated. If you get one of the vendors tunes THAT is quite simple. In the case of EcuTEK, you get a USB keyfob to plug into the laptop (your license), you get a cable to plug laptop into car, and they provide software you install for the application (and the driver for the cable). Plug it in, connect, load your tune, profit.

Or if you want a custom tune done like Gabe says, you go to your shop, and they take care of 'er.

no motiva used to be off of candelaria by I-25, but they moved to louisiana and montgomery. super nice new complex. the performance shop you're thinking of is speed lab. i've heard good things about them, but never had any work done by them.

is cali a visual inspection or a sniffer test? i believe you'll pass a sniffer with just one but not sure about "tampering or removing emissions devices"

^^this. i was under the impression that even replacing a factory cat with another cat was illegal under cali regulations unless it was deemed necessary (i.e. not working, etc.)?? much less removing one altogether... what does cali consider "smog" testing?

I believe CA Smog requires both visual and sniff test

From what I know, even a catted header won't pass unless it has a CARB approval. You can't remove or replace any emissions stuff in California unless something was old and broken, and then it has to be an OEM equivalent or carry a CARB approval.

i never run cats in anything. it's hard to convince yourself to pay more for less power if it's not a requirement. the only exception i could see is if i lived somewhere that they tested for that stuff, but i've never had to up to now.

if i were forced into running one i would probably want a high flow cat in the front pipe. the further downstream, the better.

Question

With uncatted header and catted front pipe, does this eliminate seeping exhaust smells from the floor? I've heard this happening with no cats.

I'll add to the question, would you get exhaust smells with a catless header but everything else stock?

No dice, you gotta pass visual and OBDII test. Unless you have a CARB header, you're not gonna pass (legally).
