My thinking of why it may not be based off the Yaris platform is because Toyota already has a collaboration with Mazda, the Scion iA. That is a rebadged Mazda2 sedan. Why spend money to engineer a car when you can just "borrow" a partner's?

Furthermore, the curb weight of an ND Miata is 2,332 for the manual. Curb weight for a current Yaris is around 2,315. So between all of this, it just makes more sense that Toyota would just use the Miata platform. Engine wise, I'm really thinking it's either the 1.5l out of the Scion iA/Mazda2 or the EDM MX-5, or the 1.8l out of the current USDM Corolla/Scion iM since the rumors are it'll have around 130 hp.

Try looking at model numbers of Harley-Davidson's some time like the
"Wide Glide FXSB FXDWG".
Basically they put the installed "standard" options in the model name.

I have the same feeling....

I've owned and worked on more japanese cars than american cars. (actually all the cars I've owned have been japanese) and I help my gf with working on her bronco and when she says I need a 3/16ths I just kind of look at her in confusement.... I ask her what is that in metric all the time. And she does the same haha When I ask her for a 12mm or a 18mm she gives me this confused look. I'm starting to get used to the different sizes compared to MM but I wouldnt beable to tell you by looking at a bolt and say "oh yeah thats a 5/8ths!"

Yes and she daily drives a completely rebuilt 1966 Ford Bronco that she built herself.

But to argue with @Tcoat is like arguing with a toaster.

No matter what you try to convince it. It's still a toaster.
