FR-S is a "sporty" car, but not a real sports car. When I think of sports car, I think of cars that has handling and is fast. A 370z will run laps around the FR-S any day, I am reconsidering not buying an FR-S now. I think I'll save my money for the new Porsche Cayman S, handling and fast like a real sports car should be.
Great, more for us. Have fun over heating your 370z

If you started the race at 40 MPH in 2nd, you were at ~5000 RPM. His RPM depends on his Z's year and tranny. For instance, if it was a 2003-2005 MT, I believe he would've been at ~3000 RPM if he started in 3rd.

Though the Z's engine torque jumps a bit after that, its increase isn't dramatic enough to explain his surge forward at 15 seconds (just an intake wouldn't have such an effect). Since you said he didn't downshift, I watched the video again and noticed that if you had upshifted at 18 seconds, then it took you ~6 seconds to get from 40 to ~59 MPH. That should've taken ~3 seconds.

Since that senario doesn't make much sense, I'm going to speculate that what happened is:
  • 12 seconds: Started with you in 2nd and him in 3rd at 40 MPH.
  • 15 seconds: You upshifted to 3rd.
  • 18 seconds: He upshifted.
  • 21 seconds: You upshifted.
That matches the acceleration characteristics and times one would expect for both cars, and those shift points would explain his surge forward as well as the abrupt movements of your passenger's camera.

They weren't at the line. And if my interpretation of the video is correct, the FRS in 2nd pulled harder than the Z in 3rd from 40-59 MPH (despite the 350Z's engine-torque-to-weight ratio at ~3000-4500 RPM being significantly higher than the FRS' at ~5000-7450).

Obviously if the Z had also started in 2nd, the FRS wouldn't have jumped ahead.

The video makes a good point. We all know that the FR-S/BRZ isn't designed to be a drag or roll racing car. But the fact that it lost THAT bad to a 350Z... is a good indication of general performance in the straights for a $27,000+ car.
