You know what makes the Supra so cool? The engine, and the chassis' capability of handling the power. That being said, there's probably 5-10 cars I'd swap a 2J into before actually spending the ridiculous asking price for a Supra. I've driven an N/A MKIV Supra before and it was just pathetic.

Eh, the NA is a bit crap I'll agree, but at the time, the MKIV Supra TT was a giant killer. Braking performance alone destroyed cars that where double or triple the price of the Supra. The fact that the engine (and don't forget the transmission) can take massive amounts of boost is just what keeps them beating modern giants today.

I expect all sorts of guys are currently staring at their monitor/phone/tablet now preparing for their scathing retorts!

Nope, their price was going up even before the movie. Now, of course finding a turbo model with a 6 speed that hasn't been modded or abused is harder because of all the people trying to recreate the FnF car...

See bolded text.

I'm not talking about the 90s when it came out. I'm talking about now. Today. Take the power plant and drivetrain out of it, and you're left with just a Toyota coupe.

The Supra just reminds me of a 90s version of a dodge hellcat. It's a boat, it's RWD, and the main use of 95% of the people who own them is for drag racing or roll racing on the highway. Both of which, I couldn't care less.

That's ignoring that when modded to have a decent powerband (instead of dyno and roll racing queens) they make very good track weapons. It's won One Lap of America on multiple occasions...

1. Again... that's the 2JZ you're referring to when you talk about "power band". An engine that I could swap into a variety of cars and build to become better performing track cars for a fraction of the cost of a decent stock, or lightly modified MKIV.

2. A Nissan GTR has won OLOM every year since 2011, with the Porsche GT2 taking it in 2010, all seasons of which there was no MKIV Supra even in the top 10.

3. We can talk about heavily modified track purpose cars all day long, but it's all semantics.

4. I don't care how much of a "weapon" it CAN be, I'm not spending 40k on a 20 year old Toyota. That's just me.

5. For the money, I can come up with a huge list of cars I'd rather drive on track; both from the 90s, and from now.

The list goes on and on. But you seem to have a keen interest in the MKIV, so any disagreeing is probably pointless.

Take that out of any car and its just useless. I dont understand what your point with this is? If you're talking about the value a Toyota Supra without those conponents even then the shells are still pretty expensive. Just my two cents

1) You talk like the Supra is just the engine and not the sum of it's parts. It's got a pretty damn good suspension setup from the factory and the ability to mount huge tires. The entire chassis is very robust.

2) Sadly, this seems to be the trend at he TX2K events as well. Supras are getting rare and the performance parts even more so. They still make GTR's so people see them as disposable comparatively.

3) True, but from what I've seen of various time attack Supras, there isn't as much done as you'd think.

4) Agreed. It's why I bought my BRZ because it feels like a cross between a Miata and Supra. People yelled for a long time that the Supra would never be collectable or a classic, but it's appreciating value is proving otherwise.

5) Agreed. If I had to drive a long way to a track and then drive the car on that track, it's not a bad pick. There's far better (and ultimately cheaper to run) track cars out there, the twins being one of them it appears.

Ultimately the Supra was supposed to be a luxury GT car and has always been a halo car to show what Toyota could do. Much of the tech went into Lexus and it's why I've said for a while that the LF-A was the true Supra successor. Now all we really need is a replacement for the MR2...

This is so wrong on so many levels. The Supra out handled everything else from Japan at the time including the much ballyhooed amazingly overrated NSX. Stock for stock it gave almost everything a run for its money. Lightly modded it could hang with most stock Corvettes and Vipers. Now just like every other Japanese sports car they stuffed it so full of absurdly overpriced tech the price went through the roof. The reason it is so expensive now is because it still can compete with most sports cars today, not because it appeared in some crappy movies.
