At least in Los Angeles, these have quadrupled in popularity this year. I see at least 4 a day driving between 30 minutes and 2 hours in a 50 mile radius from my house. Most of these are not the same twins. There are 4 in my parking area alone. Maybe if you don't live in a big city but in LA these are everywhere.

California is probably where most 86s were sold in NA. I drove from coast to coast in Canada and these are not "popular" at all. I honestly didn't even know about the twins until I Bought one last year in Nov.

I'd be surprised if "production is winding down", you're in a tizzy about a month where 1,500 units were sold, Honda sold less than 1k/month S2000's in 2002, two years later the facelift came out and production continued until 2009. Mazda averaged less than 500 Miata's per month over the last 5 years and they still made a brand new kickass generation.

Toyota's shortest run for a sports car in recent memory was the MR2 which got pulled in North America after 5 years or the MK4 Supra getting pulled after 6 years on the market. It's also worth noting that combined the BRZ and FR-S match the sales of the Scion TC, is that on it's way out too?

The car has only been available for three years. You'll be seeing new 86's on dealership lots for another 2 years at the bare minimum.

There really isn't anything out there that does what the 86 can do, I crammed 3 other people into my car on Friday (along with tools including a full socket set, jack, and jack stands, chairs, and two helmets) and hit the track, the car was out there running hard for nearly 3 hours (two drivers, 9x ~20 minute sessions), put the camber back to street levels, bump the tire pressures back up and drove home getting >30 mpg.

The RX-8 can come close (but that isn't a new car sale) and if FWD is cool with you the hot hatches can also hold up well (and lets be honest having an extra 6 inches of legroom would have been nice for the drive there and back).

I am going to have to budget for two more coilpacks for my next track event though...
Not in a tizzy, just saying how I see it personally. It wouldn't surprise me if production winds down. But I don't see a facelift coming for at least another year. It's still selling well enough at this point that they don't NEED to change it.

Cheers though, I didn't think it through well enough, and a few of your points were "oh shit" moments for me where I didn't think of that stuff.

Hey, don't diss my baby. The Spyder was sold for 6 years in the US, 2000-2005 inclusive. Remember, it went on sale in Japan in 1999 as a 99 and was sold until 2008. So, technically, it was sold for 9 years worldwide. (And it is truly one of the undiscovered performance gems overlooked by most enthusiast).
I will concede that they announced that it would be ending us sales in 2004 which decimated sales in 2005. There were actually still a few 2005 models that sold as late as 2007 in the US.

That being said, the twins have already outsold it by a huge margin in the 4 years they have been on sale. IMO they are not going away or getting a major update until they have been in production at least 6 years.

The drop off in sales is likely due to competing against used versions of itself, changeover to the 16 model year and a new shiny MX-5 invading. Still there are a lot of cars that sell less than 1500 (combined) units a month and they go on and on.

Drive the 401 between Kitchener Waterloo and Toronto. You can't look in any direction without seeing one.

I was actually referring to the 2nd gen MR-2 (hence why I didn't say MR-S) which was sold in America only from '91-'95 despite being in production from '89-'99. This could also apply to the first gen which was on sale only from '85-'89.

But yes on all points you made which are relevant to the discussion.

Nothing surprising here, business as usual imo.

I know for a fact that all the "First 86" were not sold in May 2012. Some sat at dealerships for a couple months before being sold (and titled) to customers. I suspect that the dealers may be considered Toyota/Subaru's customers and these numbers may be based on units delivered to them.
Can't use the release month since they were going to have 86 sold even if the real number was 2 or 1000. There was one person here that said theirs was pushed into a June sales date (even though bought in May) because there were already too many on the sold books. I have a hard time believing there were less than 86 sold across the U.S. On the month of release.

I didn't make up that the numbers are dealer sales.

I was a tech in that area and I would only see them on 401/400/404 but not as many as you would Z's.

Every time I go to GTA, either 401/Mississauga or North York area I see at least 1-2, if not more.
On my trip last week, on 403 I saw a blue BRZ speeding pretty damn fast, we were going around 120, but the guy was coming in much faster, until he caught up with a block of cars. No surprised the GTA guys get boned with the insurance rates, they deserve em with that kind of fast driving :P.

In KW, I cross the town South to North for work, I feel like I see plenty for such a small place, figures we have many younger people, who are probably in tech jobs (or in their parents basement ) and they are into these kind of cars, unless they buy the BMWs or Audis . I actually see a lot owners in late 20, mid 30s people who arent all "swag and yo", just regular folks, makes for a pretty nice meets, as few as I've attended over last 3-4 years. For being non-"race car" guy, its nice, not intimidating.

I actually see lesss Zs than twins in our area. They got older and cheaper, but for some reason not as many younger kids get them. They sure do go for the G35 more, cause luxury bro! Some times they just give it the boot and kick my ass as I'm slowly crawling my way, im not mad, after dealing with oil eating VQ35 in both Maximas in the family, I officially sworn off Nissan

I just read that Ford only moved 10k Focus STs in 2014. They moved less than 5k Fiesta STs. Things aren't so dire here for the twins, IMO.

Two questions.

1.) Do we have any 2015 data yet for an update?

2.) I read this article from 2012 about how they aren't manufacturing that many but the ones that are have been flying away from the dealers in a couple days. http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012...ype=blogs&_r=1 I don't know if that is still the case, although I had to drive to Massachusetts to test drive one and it was a 2013 with 60k.. There was another one in a part of Connecticut that was newer but further away than the Mass. dealer but that was it! It was also cheaper to buy a 2016 new from the factory in Series.HyperBlue than this 2015 in CT with some miles on it. Some dealers were telling me they are selling too fast and some were telling me they are selling to too slow so they aren't producing as much.

Either way I don't care I kind of like that it is a rare bird, makes it more interesting. It feels exclusive. I just wonder if Subaru is doing that on purpose or if the demand just really isn't all that high. It does seem like a niche car built for enthusiasts regardless and I'm perfectly happy with that.
