hmmm interesting first time I drove a Camry (recent model, rental), the "sport manual" mode is baffling to me. It gives you this number on the dash, that I'm guessing indicates the gear you are in, but it shifts all by itself still! Pushing the shifter wasn't even a suggestion to the computer, it would just go about its own business. Makes you wonder, why put a manual mode if the car completely ignores the driver input?

My car has this, but it won't shift up for you (never tested the car to do that). It will downshift, but it's a little late in that department, thus giving the driver some gap time to choose when they want to downshift. I only used the sport mode my first week when I got my car but it wasn't the same.

It doesn't shift up nor does it shift down, it just goes about its own business! Really the strangest thing ever. I really cannot understand how or why they did this.

I put it in "6" because otherwise it mostly refuses to use 6th gear for some odd reason, but it automatically downshifts when you step on it. If you leave it in "4", what happens is it'll start in 2nd and shift normally, then when it hits 4th it sorta tries to stay in 4th, but I think I remember noticing it shift down to avoid revving like an S2000 on the highway.
