yeah awd will only help put you further in the ditch. I learned how to drive in the snow with a 240sx. never got stuck and never had any problems. winter tires + skill makes a car great in the winter.

Good winter rubber is everything... well almost everything precise throttle control is also a very good thing to have.

Also if you've never driven in snow, if the car does start to slide/slip do not jam the brakes, letting go of the gas or controlling the throttle will allow you to regain traction. Braking (unless done in small amount at the right moment) will only make you slide further.

My best bet for you OP is to find a big open parking in the winter (first few weeks) and spend a few hours learning the behavior of the car on snow/ice (voluntary spinout, throttle and braking amounts needed, etc.)
