driving in winter
okay.. this is going to sound like a dumb question, but I have an issue. Do any of you drive your car year round? Like on the slippery roads in the winter? In snow?
Lived in Hawaii all my life. Moving to Carson City/Reno, NV somewhere and my car isnʻt selling. That means Iʻm going to have to ship it. No idea how to drive in winter and have been told a rear wheel car isnʻt a good option.. Advise please!! |

It's drivable but some winter tires will make you almost unstoppable.. If you're on a budget just get 2 and put them on the back

By " unstoppable" you mean I can drive on slippery roads?
Do you drive your FRS in the winters in Philly? |

I drive my car year round with winter tires in the snowy seasons. I don't know that I'd call it unstoppable, as it's very low to the ground and the snow makes the car even more tail-happy than normal, perhaps even floaty, but it's very manageable. Just avoid giving it too much throttle in turns and realize that if the snow is up to the bumper it's going to turn into a plow with not nearly as much traction. But there are no absolutes, so YMMV. I can only share my experiences. |

I can't speak from personal experience - I will learn about RWD this winter as well. I have run a Subaru with winter tires for the past few years. The difference from using all seasons vs winter tires was appreciable enough for me to never use all seasons again. |

My brz is good in the winters here in Colorado with winter tires. The only time I had trouble moving was when we had a very dry powdery snow and couldn't get moving. If I dug out a bit I probably would have been ok.

Do not try it without good winter tires.
Winter tires make a massive difference in stopping distance, (which is greatly increased in snow,) as well as lateral grip. I suggest ordering some fresh Altimax Arctics pre-mounted on steelies or cheap alloys from Tire Rack for winters.

Last Christmas/New Year week, I drove up to Colorado Springs from New Mexico in snow and ice on the stock tires. Despite getting stuck in an apartment complex parking lot, I really had no problem getting around.

I have visited Reno, NV many times and had a friend who lived there for over 4 years.
They don't much snow in the lower levels, unless you head to the Mt. Rose or other ski resorts, you will be required to have chains for bad snow days. You maybe able to get away with all seasons.....any locals want to weigh in?

This one did not even require a search. The existing thread was 4 below it at the time it was written a 30 second scan of what was already there was all that was needed.

The car is fine with winter tires. Driving in inclement weather on the stock summer tires (or probably any summer tire) is irresponsible and downright dangerous.
