Looking suggestions for a sick aftermarket hood :D

Most aftermarket, mass-produced fiberglass/CF hoods take the OE hood and mold it, down to the crumple zone dimples in the stock hood rib. This is just how people are when it comes to being cheap.

For that price I'd rather cut into a stock hood and install vents. Much safer.

Couldn't cutting into a stock hood also affect it's crumple characteristics? Probably so, to what degree it would likely take an automotive crash engineer to speak towards with any credibility. What's missing from your reply though is that there are likely no aftermarket hoods that are meant for use on public roads as they would probably require some sort of certification and crash testing. With aftermarket parts we get that disclaimer all the time though, but then again we all know that, right?

Coincidentally enough I will be at the crash test center on Tuesday and since you have now peaked my curiosity I am actually going to pose that very question to said engineer. I will report my findings.

Hell yeah thanks. That will help me decide which direction to go in the future. I've only found two kinds of stock hood vent options

1. A louver press like the one used in

winning car.

2. These larger vent add-ins from companies like RunCool.

*quick note on Seibon carbon. I actually own a piece (wet carbon OEM trunk replacement) and it's been great. Bought it for looks only, but it's had no cracking or yellowing and was much lighter than the stock steel trunk.

The fun part will be translating what will probably be a 45 minute answer full of technobabble into something that can be written in a reasonably sized post. Those guys don't get out much and really love it when anybody talks to them.

I'm going to take a stab and guess that the hood is not considered with respect to collision energy absorption. They have to double-latch and they have to fold up before they endanger occupants of the car.

The great thing is I wasn't joking. It can take anywhere from 12 to 72 hours to set up a crash test and with the demand for the facility those guys can spend 15 or 16 hours a day there. They really, really like visitors.
I suspect you are 100% correct on your stab though. Many parts are specifically designed to fly away from the occupants in a crash. It is almost uncanny what they have learned from crash tests and even the most basic and mundane things are considered. Before hanging out there I would never have dreamt that even the side mirrors are designed to fly away from the car in the case of a oblique impact. Oh, and a box of Kleenex on the rear deck my give you a headache in a crash but a text book on Modern Expressionist Painters will take your head off for sure.

More people should see how everyday objects become serious missile hazards in a mishap. I'm amazed at what I sometimes see in friends' cars.

The most eye opening test I saw was a bag of groceries consisting of 3 cans, a quart of milk and some frozen peas in a plastic bag on the front passenger seat of a vehicle much larger than a FRS (can't say what vehicle) in a roll over. The freakn' peas caused damage so you can imagine what the cans did.
