Yeah, what's up with that? I've never understood how that could possibly work.

Is your old system R22 or 410a? You can still get dry charged R22 units for residential install if needed so you don't have to replace the evaporator

Trane and Carrier are both good, as stated earlier make sure it is appropriately sized. Are you hiring a contractor/AC install company? Just have them make you a few quotes comparing the different brands.
We tried looking for other possible problems with the AC but couldn't find anything. Then we had someone check it out for us and told us that a wire was burnt or something and that we needed a new whole unit. The weather is getting cooler so it's not as humid inside the house as it was last weekend.

I think it will work to some extent. I feel like you'll still end up with bugs inside the house though. But I might give this method a try for when I need to use the back door often when I'm grilling or whatever.

If its the compressor wires, it does happen... if its not too bad you can get kits made exactly for this with better connectors to reduce the amount of resistance a bad connection causes which can burn up wires.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Term-LOK-TLC310-Compressor-Terminal-Repair/dp/B004UW0GGC"]Amazon.com : Term-LOK TLC310 3 Wire Compressor Terminal Repair Kits 10 Gauge : Vehicle Amplifier Battery Wiring And Terminals : Electronics[/ame]

It sounds like the terminals were too far gone if the guy said you needed a whole new unit, if the terminals got really bad they can actually break the seal around the terminals and all the magic ice juice leaks out

I killed the compressor in my heat pump 5 years ago. My own stupidity. The unit is at least 20 years old. The guy tried to sell me on a new unit but I called BS. Made him replace the compressor and watched him like a hawk. He had to go back to the shop to get the tools to fully evacuate the system before adding the refrigerant. 600 bucks later and it was working like new. Soon after, I found the floating ground in the control system that intermittently caused the blower to fail. It's keeping me cool as I type.

There are only a couple moving parts and ANYTHING can be fixed as long as due diligence is followed.
