I stopped by AutoTuned yesterday and chatted with Young Tea about the differences between the Tomei UEL and the Gruppe-S UEL. I thought the only real difference was the lack of branding on the flange, but since he had just installed a Tomei UEL the day before, he noted that bridges on mine were on the top of the header rather than the bottom. The benefit is that with the Tomei header, he's had customers note a tapping sound that comes from the bridges tapping against the undertray, and since those bridges are no longer there, it may not produce that tapping sound. In the week I've had it installed, I haven't heard anything, but I'll listen more closely to be sure. Either way, it seems like a welcome change.
I also just noticed that, after comparing my set to a picture off of rallysportdirect.com, the two longer runners have different paths than the Tomei. So all in all, I thought they were the same but I was wrong - its very similar to the Tomei in that I think the flanges (besides the stamps) and the collector and the shorter runners are the same, but its actually a bit different. For better or worse in regard to the paths? Who knows. But if I'm judging by sound, I like the sound of mine in the videos compared to the Tomei examples. (understanding that the other pieces also play a large part in the overall sound) Tomei (picture from RallySportDirect) ![]() Gruppe-S (from my build thread)

Sounds great with the header, I like that you can subtly hear the SC too. How are you liking the JRSC? Do you have any track videos?

I might be going to Auto Club Speedway August 8th and/or 9th though, depending on whether I can get a bunch of parts installed, get tuned, and get an alignment. I'm trying to do batch installs so I don't have to touch those sections again. (for awhile) The rigid collars, subframe bushings, lower control arms, trailing arms, end links, and bump steer pieces will probably all go in at once before being towed to West End for alignment. Before that is a tune, but I'm waiting to switch to Delicious Tuning's FlexFuel kit and to install my oil cooler. I could go without the oil cooler and the Moto-East kit I currently have, but I don't want to have to retune in case something's different between the FF kits. |

Installed the Subaru cover. Not sure I like it, its a random blue i the engine bay and really none of the blue's match up as well as I'd like them to. I might change the nameless DI ECU cover for stock, and change the engine cover back to stock. Then install another STI oil filter. For now, meh. Pics:
![]() Some other things came in: ![]() In case anyone was wondering, the STI bolts can fit with the Perrin Steering Rack Lockdowns: ![]() ![]() ![]() The STI knob has a really nice weight to it. Although, I still prefer the actual tS one, which I believe isn't available for purchase. Still waiting on the STI shifter and STI steering rack bushings. |

Those are some looooooong bolts! The stock ones have to be 1/2 that size. Did they fit?

From this thread The bolts looked right, but what I assumed were the stock bolts didn't look right. (and yet maybe they are) I found this page with this picture that helped though: ![]() And this page with this picture: ![]() Each had other good pictures as well, but long story short, yes its the correct bolt. I was pretty worried for a bit though. |

Installed the STI shift knob today:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's my STI MT shift knob review: The weight difference from stock is considerable. I feel that, although I liked the stock shift knob quite a bit, this shift knob is a better fit for me. The STI knob is a bit taller and has a groove for the bottom finger(s). The weight has actually changed the shifting a lot - they seem to be move into gear easier. I'm actually really happy with it this modification alone, and wondering whether once the MTEC shifter springs, Cusco shifter bushing, TRD quick shifter (which goes below), and STI shifter (which is in the cabin) are installed if the shift feel will actually be better. While this shift knob fits better in the palm of my hand, I initially noticed that it was taller because of the increased distance to the reverse lockout. That prompted me to check out the differences in weight, ergo, texture and height. The texture isn't smooth anymore either, which I prefer. It feels more premium, and less sticky, especially in the wet, hot, humid weather we've been having in California lately. On another note, I have a date with Church Automotive in a few weeks. Need to get everything installed by then.

I'll be sure to snap some pics once I install them. From the pictures I've seen and what I've read, it seems straightforward.

More parts came in. Its going to be a long weekend...
STI Mission Mount STI Flexible Draw Stiffeners STI Steering Rack Bushings STI Short Shifter TRD Quick Shifter MTEC Shifter Springs MTEC Clutch Spring Perrin End Links Perrin Reverse Lockout Cusco Lower Control Arms ![]() These, plus with the awaiting Perrin PSRS Perrin Steering Rack Lockdowns Jackson Racing Oil Cooler STI Steering Rack Hardware I'm genuinely concerned I am not going to finish prior to my tuning appointment in a couple weeks. Some things might have to wait, depending on the amount of time there is. Also, I purchased the Cusco bushing replacement kit/tool to help with the steering rack bushings. One-time use for me, but perhaps I'll be able to help some locals in the future. |

Subscribing. Loving the build!
Let us know how the quickshifter/short shifter install does with the driveshaft. I am under the impression they don't fit together. (i.e. they rub). Makes me want to start ordering all the cusco/sti parts I have been drooling over, but all in due time.
