Oil temps need to be above boiling, otherwise you will not burn off water and non-oil parts that may accumulate.

I'll have to pay more attention. I was under the impression though that 180 to 220 degres with an oil cooler was an acceptable range for normal driving. 220 degrees when pushing it a bit harder.

I mainly keep track of my coolant temps with my p3 gauge, I guess I have to pay more attention to the oil temps. Perhaps I have reached higher temps but wasn't monitoring the oil temps at the time.

Another forum member @spdbydesign created a thread in which he reported the following: (his oil temps with oil cooler were consistent with my reported temps with oil cooler.)

__________________________________________

88-89F Outside Temperature
Clear, Sunny Skies

Without the cooler, we saw 104-105 Celsius or 220F after a few 3rd gear highway pulls. Cruising we saw 98 Celsius or 208F.

With the oil cooler installed, 88 Celsius or 190F the highest we saw after a few 3rd gear highway pulls. Cruising we saw 84F Celsius or 183F.

__________________________________________

Getting curious about all this, I guess I'll have to dive into some more research.

My car oil temp was running 280F before getting off the expressway, and pulling over to the side of the road. Along with the water temp slowly increasing .

UPDATE: After doing a whole coolant flush of the system. The car oil, and coolant temps dropped into the same range as zeal86 stated in his post. I did test the new thermostat to make sure it worked. The verdict was it just didn't have enough coolant in the system. A very low amount of coolant for the matter. Thank you everyone for the assistance.

Awesome! Glad to hear you got your baby back on the road. I've learned or come to understand a few things more clearly because of your post.

I've always learned or understood more through troubleshooting than just reading instructions... some people can get away with just reading how to do something.

The scare you got from having a low coolant level just made you more knowledgeable about your 86 or cars in general... that's a positive!

really ?

What viscosity oil
on 0w20 i would be getting a bit concerned re pressures at 250F plus oil temps

above on unmodded car

then on boosted car with oil cooler which drops a bit of pressure
