Advice needed on 225/45R17 tires on stock rims

I am considering a tire change from the stock tires to Pilot Super Sports. I noticed that the 225/45R17 has nearly 3/4" more tread width than the 215/45R17. The stock rims are actually pretty light compared to most aftermarket rims that sell below $200 each. If I make the change to 225's, what can I expect?:

Will the handling characteristics of the car change significantly? If so, what changes can I expect?

Are there any safety concerns with using a 225 profile tire on a 17X7" wheel?

Are there any other problems or issues that I should consider?

Generally speaking, is this a good idea or should I stick with the 215s?

Thanks.

You are asking I think 2 questions :

1. How are Michelin Pilot Super Sports?

They are a great street tire, and have lots more grip than the stock tires. I have driven these on a heavier RWD car and they feel great.

2. How is fitting 225 section width tires vs 215 section width?

225 width tires is no problem for 7" wheel width. You can use the TireRack tire pages to see the wheel width range for each tire.

The car will be a bit taller since the 225/45 is not the same overall diameter as 215/45. To me, not a big deal.

Handling, the 225/45 vs. 215/45 will not feel that much different (same tire compared)

drewbot,

I already had decided on the PSS tires for my car, since I like good traction on the street and I don't track the car. The Primacy tires are a bit too "slippy" for my taste.

You've answered my main question, which is whether any issues might arise by using the 225's on the stock rims. Obviously, the answer is "don't worry." Thanks for your help!

Please post after you get them
I am thinking of getting the 225 tires now and getting 7.5" or 8" rims later.
The stock tires make too much noise, they are going to get me in trouble

Really? What, are you sneaking out at night?

Actually, I know what you mean. Every time I turn a corner and accelerate even a little, the tires have something to say about it. It probably will be a month or two before I have time to get the tires swapped out, but I will followup on the switch and my impression of the changes then.

Primacy's currently at 1.5 Years... the longer you have them, the easier it is to make them squeel... even at sharp turns in a parking lot going 5 MPH will make you sound speed racer lol. I have 6/32nds left.
