Ah. When did you start your build? I still haven't bought mine yet so I'm trying to plan ahead and give myself enough time for install and tunes.

I've been waiting quite some time for my kit to come in. I am still waiting on a few parts which should be here this week and I can finish it up this weekend.

I ordered back in late February though, lol. I've been slowly just working on it for the last few weeks since I haven't had a reason to rush through it to get it running. Literally all I have left is to install the compressor housing, connect the hotside intercooler piping, and install the overpipe/front pipe. Then just put the bumper and crap back on.

Either way, the flange you bought should definitely help paired with a not paper gasket. I'd imagine once the paper is saturated, you're screwed.

Yep that sounds like the situation and with the extreme heats these things are seeing, its no surprise. JDL supplies us with the gasket used like any other kit out there. Should be fine, its just one of those things that could fail every now and then, florida also see's retarded humidity changes so im sure its not helping, lol its like those close to the sea with the salt.

The install is simple, I try do do things in my head, like you, most times but that gives me a headache. There are lots of things we can't visualize and that lack of guides, instructions around the forums doesn't really help. Just give yourself plenty of time and by this I mean a little more than a weekend to do things slowly. I know from experience that when you're relatively short on time you want to do things quicker and have some time left to spare to review things, this install is serious and shouldn't be one of those quickies. You don't want hoses, popping, touch hot parts, boost or vacuum leaks, wires burning lol. Although this isn't common it could happen. Just take it easy and if in doubt, double check, ask and retighten lol. Hit me up any time, I'm usually around.

This is the best way to go about this install, this way you have plenty of time to do each little thing. Once everything is put together you don't want to have to go back and start unbolting stuff. I'm sure the gasket will hold up, if not, its a simple replacement and by that time I would have already confirmed what works and what doesn't. I think my problem now is that the gasket paper im using isn't as "high temp" as its supposed to be lol.

Well crap. The more I read, the more I realize it'll be like 3 months after I buy everything before I can get it, much less factoring for install time.

It doesn't help that the longer I spend on the forums, the bigger the build list gets.

I have never had a leak in that area in all the Garrett turbos I have used. I never used a double gasket method, just a single gasket. I wonder if it is an issue with the oil drain backing up?

It is worth the wait. I know people who got their kits rather quickly, its just luck of the draw I think. I also had a lot more things done and customized, I didn't order the base kit with base coatings etc. I won't sit here and say thats the reason why its taken so long because what I requested definitely did not drag it out that to its current time frame but I knew going in that i'd most likely have to wait. Also my car is no longer my DD so I didn't care too much lol. I haven't driven it in like 8 months though

Could be, or could be because the double gasket. Yommy try just using a single gasket on it.

My plan is to use the Garrett ball bearing upgrade that JDL offers. Whether or not that will help with the leak, I have no idea.

All the Garrett center sections regardless of journal or ball bearing utilize the same oiling setup. As an interesting addition I actually learned a couple weeks ago that on water cooled Garrett center sections they actually prefer the turbo to be at a slight angle and that the water lines are supposed to be plumbed with the water flowing from the low side to the high side of the turbo.

Yeah, I DD mine so I'll have to take like a week for the install. Initially I'll be super excited and try to rush things, but once I hit a snag, I'll slow down and finally take my time.

Either way, I really look forward to the purchase assuming AVO doesn't come out with something that deters me from JDL. UEL turbos sound the best so it's down to those two.

That was my assumption, but it never hurts to ask. I'd be able to use the same flange design he bought to replace the stick one, correct?

Yep, spot on. Here is a PDF from Garrett regarding the angle and coolant lines.

Interesting read, I would have thought that the hot water drain would be the lower port. Im not familiar with JDL's BB design but I would like to assume they're setting the manifold in a way to allow this 20 degree slope. For the sake of conversation, since most of us in this platform use the TB coolant lines for the water cooling portion, this doesn't really allow for a nice drop or drain of the water oulet from the center housing since the turbo typically sits lower than the TB. Maybe this doesn't really matter since the water pump flow will circulate it without needing gravity?

PS- Answer to myself, the pdf clearly states the hot water outlet should be allowed to travel uphill to where it meets the system's coolant.
