Spec d headlight.
So I've had my spec d headlights for just barely under a year. Works great. Looks great. Perfect. But today I realize on the drivers side. My headlight started to separate from the housing. I'm guessing with the heat lately. It separated it. Would it be safe just to use a heat gun and basically push it back together?

You can do that but buy some extra sealant to ensure that no water leaks into it! Find high temp sealant for best result if you live in a very dry/hot area. Best wishes

I'm just gonna try and do this tomorrow. After I wait for the glue to dry. I'll wash the car.

Use windshield adhesive... the 3M version. AutoZone has it.

I took off the head light off the car. And it was a lot worse than I thought. I'm glad I caught it before it started to rain. I tried to use a heat gun to soften up the glue. And clamp then back together. But it was impossible. I figured I'd take off the whole housing and reapply it. Clips didn't line up or anything. Anybody have any other ideas? I would hate to throw these headlights away or let them rot in garage.
That's a pic of what they looked like as soon as I took them off the car. |

Consider the oven method? Put them in the oven on 150-175 for five minutes. Take apart then reapply with more glue. It may take two times in the oven to take apart and to put back together. Use the heat; dont try to pull if it cools fast.

I have thought about that. But I didn't attempt. There are 3 wires and a crap load of LEDs in the headlight and I didn't want to ruin those. I used a heat gun and blow drier to get the projector off the housing. Now the clips don't line up.

I solder LED SMD chips at 425+ Fahrenheit, occasionally up to 600 depending on particular situation. (Seconds versus minutes does make a difference, but not at this temperature.) This posses absolutely no threat. Just don't let any part of the headlight touch metal. Place the headlight on a wooden sheet/plank or blocks.
If you want to be safe, pop it in at 200 for 10 minutes. It's already separated for the most part.

The headlight is separated now. I'm having trouble putting the headlight back together at this point.

Ah I see. What are the screw holes looking like? It shouldn't have even been possible to separate if it was screwed together. Did Spec D even use screws? Is there any chance of the black housing being messed up to the point where the screws pulled through?

They did use screws. 6 total. I don't believe the black housing was messed up at all. As they were never tampered with. Put it did just look like the 1 screw was just screwed into the glue.

It may have just been a miss assembly from the factory. Remove all of the screws, if you haven't already and try again. The sealant has to be malleable (HOT) or else the lens won't move even if it feels like it is... Unless you have Hulk hands or something.

Yea what he said. It needs to be pulled out of the oven fast and immediately pressed together because it'll get cool within maybe 15-30 seconds (depending on the oven setting) and be impossible to press together.
