Clutch done at 37k?
drove two hours today to flagstaff in Arizona from phoenix, as it rained towards the end of the drive I went over a few puddles and pretty heavy rain. When I got into town ten minutes later I could smell a very strange scent like rain mixed with clutch. Then as I started going through gears the clutch started to not grab and I had to engage it longer than normal. I pulled over popped the hood and there was some faint steam and smoke. Had it towed to nearest Subie dealer for now, but will not know what's wrong until Monday. Anyone have an idea? I can't imagine the clutch going out so early but I fear that is the problem. Thanks.

hmmm.......sorry to read your day got wrecked up ......
![]() Well, I suppose that it's possible some water got on the clutch disk and caused to slip. Not likely though. Are you "hard on" the clutch .... ?? Steam from under the hood after going through high water could be just that hot stuff got wet and is drying off. Maybe IF the clutch disk got wet, it may have smoked itself a bit trying to dry off .... ![]() I reckon the dealer will sort it out. Please keep us posted. humfrz |

Typically one of three things will cause the clutch to fail prematurely:
1) Aggressive, hard driving 2) Inexperience leading to excessive slipping of the clutch 3) Manufacturer's defect Only you'll know best which of the three is most likely in your situation. I will say that while many believe that because this is a sports car it is intended to be driven like a sports car (and I'm one of them), when it comes to warranty claims Subaru is known to use that stereotype to deny warranty claims citing aggressive driving as the reason. Take from that what you will. Hopefully it's the manufacturer's defect as the first two possibilities will be tough to convince the dealer or SOA to warranty. Best of luck and I hope your car is road-ready quickly and cheaply! |
