It took me a second to figure out what that mechanical monster thing at the PDF was. So I guess I shouldn't drive through the car wash with my hood up... darn there goes my plans for tomorrow.

You know this is also something very similar to what happened with Toyota in Japan, way back with the ORIGINAL AE86.

Toyota Corolla dealerships sold the Levin (fixed light) and the Toyota Vista dealerships sold the Sprinter Trueno (pop up lights). Corolla dealerships usually sold more mundane low-cost cars in the era, while the Vista sold cars like Crown and Mark II's at the time. SO there was a fanbase war going on about which was made better, which had more style, etc... When both cars were mechanically identical and simply sold with a different name and different dealership in Japan.

It is funny for me, as this is much like happening again... Hahaha. When you see it happen so many times, and the same car goes through 25+ years of different fanbase, like the AE86, I can only assure you... That the FT86 siblings in all three forms, BRZ/FRS/(GT)86, will really not matter much in 15 years, when the second generation of folks acquire them as used cars for the road or track. Hack away at custom parts and upgrades to reflect the new technologies we don't see now, and enjoy them all as ONE car, possibility called the FT86 collectively...

No one really cares that the AE86 is a Levin or Trueno today, and us older fans, and the new emerging fanboys only call it the AE86. Perhaps in 25 years, these FT86 siblings brand identity may also, not matter, and at such time it will only be thought of as one. And see Subaru faces on Scion tails, and vice versa... And whatever mix and match that fancies the owner.

The important thing is that it is still enjoyed 25 years from now, intact with the identity that it is neither BRZ or FRS, but more that it is one awesome car we all enjoy, and to teach the younger generations when you are older like me, at 43 years of age. And tell them that flying cars are great, and banana peel fuels are the way, (like Hybrids and Airbags, and ABS today) but here is something we all need to enjoy restoring and work on...build and race, or decorate for shows.

OK, I gotta ask. How is this any different than all the folks here that want to rebadge their Scion as a Toyota? If anything, I would think this just helps complete the masquarade!

It's no different at all. It is merely a topic of popular conversation, and a culture that is now. It's a healthy thing, as it means the car is worthy of talking about to most folks that have an interest in it from Subaru, Scion or Toyota. To the engineers, it was one product, and to owners who buy it for what it is, it is a fine automobile either way, and the same as far as I'm concerned. I just happened to have a FRS since I am closer to the folks at Toyota all these years in what I do.

As always, spot on, and I'm right with you. It's all good, just had to stir the pot a bit....

To me the difference is the Toyota badges are visible, so spending money on that is a least sort of justifiable. Nobody is ever going to see this little sticker so why spend money on it. Like others have said nobody bothers covering the VW logos underneath their Audis and Porsches.
