Don't listen to that Hontard.
He knows nothing about cars or engines LMAO.

He is Captain. "k20 with bolt ons and a tune makes 250whp!"

But his idea of bolt ons is a full valve train replacement, cams, etc etc.

If you look deeper into the FA20 from an engineering standpoint, it's not meh. From the driver's seat of a stock car, sure it can be during daily driving; but it was inspired by an ae86 not the supra...should have known the difference before you bought the car. It has to be understood that the car was built for you to upgrade.
Many people say they should have put in traditional subie motors but FA20 has:
-Simpler head oiling
-Better head cooling (less chance of knock)
-Lighter pistons
-VVT adjustments

If you want spoon-fed performance, this isn't the car for you. I personally got my car at a ridiculous price, expecting issues to exist or arise and I would accept responsibility for them and solve them. I can't say the same for OP, and thankfully, I have had none as of yet.

Like I said, that hontard knows nothing about cars or engines.
the fa20 is a really well designed engine. The fact that you can turbo the car reliably is proof.
fa20 is still an infant, and Subaru has already put out over 300 hp using the fa20 block....

To say fa20 is a "meh" engine is just ignorant.

Gotcha.
Boring power delivery.
I can see what you're saying.

I guess I'm just a fanboy. It's hard for me to ignore the technical success of the FA20. It incorporates a fairly new injection method for a very modest price. The engine layout sits so low in the car, which is rear drive, and costs the same as a Miata. We all TEST DROVE the car, so we all knew the engine's limitations. I figure if I ever become bored with it, it's up to me to install forced induction, and even then, STILL cheaper than a new Lotus Elise, Lotus Exige, Jaguar F-type or Porsche Boxter, just to name a few of the more powerful new rear-drive cars. I mean, it really all boils down to cost. And there IS an upper rev range. If I used my paddles during every commute and kept it in the higher revs I'd be getting arrested every thirty minutes.

I see where you're coming from, but I still think it's a little gem, packaged in an inexpensive lightweight rear-drive coupe, just waiting to be supercharged.

Compared to one of the good Honda engines, it's a shitty motor (from a driving experience point of view, I don't get off on technical improvements). It is boring in comparison. Not really bad, just different. Good Honda engines haven't been made for awhile though IMO.

Technically they do get bolted onto the head.. I agree that those aren't bolt-ons though.

And I really don't like K series engines anyways. They aren't much more exciting than the FA20 is.

The FR-S/GT86 is more Subaru than Toyota.

Never realized how much more until I got in a WRX and noticed the design, shared/similar parts, layout.

I've always been a huge Toyota fan but this is the first one I've owned that did not win me over.

In regards to the FA20 its a major ding to have such a huge torque dip from the factory and to have to go aftermarket just to try and get rid of it.

I don't find it at all odd that the guys with user names like Evomike and DohcTor don't like the 86. What I do find odd is that they both still have one (Well Evo does I have never been quite convinced that Doch has ever owned any car much less an 86)

Matter of opinion but I sold my S2000 and still have my old Integra...

Without a doubt the FA is technically superior to the extremely aged EJ engines. I immediately removed a new STI from my list of possible cars just because of that lump of crap sitting in the engine bay

Exactly. In that other thread i mentioned: With his logic, technically FI is a bolt-on mod too.

K20 with bolt on tune will put down about 220whp.
K20 / k24 frank will put down about 300whp n/a with built engine.
But new k24 is just not the same. Honda has been dead to me for while.
