When I bought mine these cars had not been overly riced yet.

These cars can't be the new civic, they don't hold their value like one.

But seeing these threads like the guy who plasti dipped entire car matte black and the other with the ricer wing and teal badges and splash guards sure as hell don't help this platform get away from the ricer stigma.

It has been fun to watch the evolution of what defines "rice" over the last 4 decades.
To us pony/muscle car owners back in the mid 70s to early 80s any and all Japanese cars (from a 240z up to the most basic 4 door sedan) were "rice burners" or "ricers". It didn't matter if they were fast, slow, modded, stock or anything else. If they were built in Japan they were rice.
Into the 80s and early 90s when the Japanese cars became more popular and common people started trying to make base model US cars look, sound and be more like the Japanese ones. Cars like the Tempo and Neon would get the Japanese car treatment and these pretenders took over the name of "ricers" and not many actual Japanese models were called that anymore regardless of what had been done to them.
Then the Fast and Furious movie came out. What had been a relatively small regional hobby of going to extremes with mods exploded around the world and shot these heavily modded Japanese cars to the forefront. This resulted in the name of "ricer" returning to the Japanese cars that had been extensively changed.
Now just a few years later the general preference has swung back to more subdued mods so even something as small as some stickers can be considered "rice" by certain groups of people.
There is a very obvious trend for anybody that doesn't like some very minor point about a car to cry "rice" even though they have done things to their own car that puts them squarely in the middle of that category.

THAT explains it all.

I'm 32. Before those stupid films came out, there were nice cars and ugly cars as far as myself or any of my friends were aware. Those idiotic films inspired a whole culture pretty much overnight, and people with modified Japanese cars were suddenly judged immature and insecure. There was a stigma to be avoided. We obviously "hadn't got enough attention as a child".

I hate those films.

AND, probably indirectly responsible for the deaths of more than a few teenagers, as well as the slow lingering deaths of many more poor cars.

You got it! I am sure many younger guys will argue the point but the reality is that prior to those movies the import car crowd was a very different demographic.

I like rice. We should hang out. Get a bowl of some rice and teriyaki plus a few beers.

LOL - they were mostly Asian back in the 90's. my buddies were into Initial D, and i liked Wangan Midnight since i had owned a '78 280Z since 1985. The other ethnic groups seemed to be more into muscle cars and low riders - less so the imports.

After F&F came out, every kid with a backwards baseball cap was a street racer.

LMAO at that acronym.

But lets just say that your acronym is correct and when people called something "rice" for the first time they had that acronym in mind.

Are you saying that a car with 1000hp can't have "Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements"?

In 1970 we called these rice and there was nothing race inspired about them!

To state my position: I don't consider wheels and tires and a cat-back to be"Riced". You may or may not according to your definition.

That said, Keep in mind that for every one that is Riced out, there are 50 that are left stock. (Yes I did make that ratio up, but think if accurate)

So, if you think you are seeing a lot of rice running around look at the bright side, that means that there are a lot of buyers out there and the car will be around for a while.

As to diminishing the value of "Your Investment" keep in mind that cars are never an investment.

The insurance question will continue to be an age and experience related ratio as it has always been. I don't think that the number of accidents or the rice image is going to impact this.Theft being one of the few reasons why insurance companies ever bump up the rates for a particular vehicle after it is introduced.

So relax, I get that rice is not your thing nor is it mine, but do take a bit of time and appreciate some of the rice mods that show skill and talent from the owner. It is there. And damn, they seem to get the hot chicks at the show eh?

insurance going up? yes. that sucks.
idiots making their cars uglier than yours? good!

think about how cheap junkyard parts are gonna be in the next 5 years! the yards are gonna be FULL of twins, just waiting to be picked.

my buddy chris put it perfectly. this is a unique car, in that it has almost no direct "rivals", but they are in no way special.

if they'd not offered an autotragic transmission, that would make the car unique. kids who are moving from their auto civic to an auto twin, deserve what's coming to them.

The other thing is, these really aren't that cheap. They're not in the civic price range. The civic starts at about 7k less, and you can get year or two old ones cheap. This car doesn't have nearly as large a used market to choose from and they start mid 20s. Though it's clear people have over extended themselves as I'm starting to see a lot of used ones with very low miles popping up.
Yeah I have always compared the FRS/BRZ not to the civic of yesterday but more to the Integras.

SHHHHHHH I love watching people give crap to members that have been gone for years. It is a hobby for me now and I can't wait for the next thread resurrection to see it happen all over again.

I had one of those! (well except it was the 5 door "wagon" and was green/Tan like the one below)

Mine was "riced up" a bit. Unlike the one below it had a chrome grill guard upside down "U" on the front that fit between the two lights, and it had meatier tires on the back jacking it up in the back. It was that way when I bought it used and I just went with it since the wheels were custom Crager knock-offs.

That was the first car I bought that cost me more than $1,000. If I could find one that looked as good as the one in this Pic, I'd probably buy it.
