Good to see R&D going into it, looks promising...

Would be good if they also considered a higher quality exhaust option,

I wonder if their original R2k exhaust option - has lasted?
Ie. Exhaust that @Jacques Blom originally installed in 2013, I am sure he changed it since going FI?

I was personally skeptical towards their original exhausts, on the basis that they did not have credible results (proven gains),
It was not a bolt on product,
and For R2k (custom front pipe and catback) was a tad shady,
(not saying if it was expensive it would be okay)

(I do understand that you could pay exorbitant prices for mediocre quality products as well,
but thats mostly RMS xclusive products and deals)

DeGraaf - Proven success in the Toyota86 industry.
(Not the best quality, but decent, bolt on, proven dyno results, Subaru parts warranty)

Powerflow - Will be interesting to see what Powerflow develops
(Ie. improvements from their original 2k product offering)
- It would be nice if they considered powder coating their exhaust, or another cost effective way to prevent corrosion.
- Provide superior placement and fitment / given that our cars are already low, try to keep the exhaust as close and tight to the undercarriage as possible.
(Optimizing the use of the hangers)
(without it touching and grinding on axles etc)
(One thing I am not a fan on with the BRZ exhaust is that it is slightly loose,
Atleast mine is,... there are people that have tight brz exhausts.
Mine also touches over residential complex speedbumps and the FR&R speedbumps in JHB)

(I do understand that one of the highlights are that they are also developing Headers,
but since this thread is on Catbacks - (Yes I am a hypocrite )

--->I decided to search on Gumtree (Ie. "Googling")...and found the following:

1. There is a catback on the secondary market for sale...Looks like those boxes need urgent Chemotherapy. (Erm)

haha Just Kidding !! - Good to see the 86 community assisting in R&D for better exhaust options.

All the best!

(Have to be cautious when posting pics of corroded exhaust components + Chirping)

Came across this on Facebook: Search "Powerflowncr"

March 2015
"Breaking News - Toyota 86

Powerflow Briardene has successfully engineered a branch manifold / header for the Toyota 86 (view pics) together with a matching performance freeflow exhaust system.

The complete unit (header and system) has been extensively tested and the pilot vehicle is now permanently running on the combined unit. The materials and workmanship is of the highest standards.

This is a top quality product."

Looks Very very impressive!

Looking forward to hear how this Header back sounds!

(Hope they launch this at all Powerflow branches as well)

Will this header be available at all Powerflow branches?
I spoke to D!ck Bate at Powerflow Salt River about a month ago and he said they still have nothing.

No doubt @Ryan86 that the materials and build quality of the newly developed Powerflow “The Growling System” (from the data above) is high standards.

I still hold my word that their original custom catbacks (R2k option) was sub-standard.

But all companies grow and develop their products, Very few get it perfect the first time around,

(Even Borla learnt it the hard way when they initially released their UEL headers which cracked, they later released a version 2 UEL Header with Flex joints),
Neither v1/v2 has the best welding nor looks perfect, but Borla has a Million Mile warranty to compensate.)

Lots of respect to Powerflow and the KZN 86 community for developing this system.

It looks like it could be a serious competitor to the BRZ exhaust De Graaf system once finalized and results (Proof of power+torque improvement) and a video of the sound is available.

(And assuming this will be a country wide offering and not limited to KZN branch? As @ShaunWRX queried.)

If you have results @Ryan86 please share.

Or if you know of anyone from Powerflow that can assist in answering questions?

With regards to power improvement: (Catback only)

The De Graaf BRZ performance exhausts, Subaru claims “7wk” , which is Flywheel KW, and in reality - tested in JHB was approx 2wkw improvement and slightly noticeable increases torque / boarder line psychological gains.
(So not expecting significant improvements from any Catback exhaust system on our N/A engines)

But, Assuming the Powerflow “Growling System” Catback system, was not only designed to complement the Powerflow UEL headers,
it will be nice to see the Catback maintaining power and increasing torque. (Ie. not causing a decrease in power).

– This is for the 86 market that is interested in the Catback option only.

“The Growling System” design:
Very interesting design, with the usage of the Y piece, splitting the exhaust and using smaller mufflers,

From my google knowledge of exhausts, On a N/A vehicle like the 86, there is no performance gain from having exhaust pass from one correctly sized pipe into two separate pipes. In fact, the turbulence of separating the exhaust flow by forking it into two pipes will cause back pressure and will likely reduce power.
(But maybe the change from 63mm to 57mm and smaller mufflers will compensate for that. Cannot confirm, that’s higher grade physics)

I am sure Powerflow got their engineering / volumetric pressure / and other scientific words in order, to ensure peak performance.

Powerflow UEL Header Design:
With regards to the UEL header, it looks like an original design, very interesting...

What I am trying to understand on the design is:
1)Is there there a custom overpipe? or
2) Does the Powerflow Catback bolt directly on the header?
(Ie. Front pipe serves as a overpipe as well?)
3) Or does it bolt onto the stock overpipe?

Eg. From my understanding the Borla UEL headers bolt on directly and fits the stock overpipe.

I have both version 1 and version 2 Borla UEL headers with me, and the position of the exit pipe (Compare to the Powerflow UEL) looks like it’s a different angle…

The Kamak UEL's exit pipe design also has a consistent angle with Borla UEL's.

NB. The Powerflow UEL header pic is tilted abit, this could be an illusion of the internet eye , you never know these days, you get blue and black dress - which is also a Gold and white dress, you might get directional illusions as well.

(NB. These question are out of the interest of design and love for UEL headers and overpipes
Ie. Not trying to question the design in bad faith... )

Recently found myself at Powerflow Midrand,

I had a walk through their shop/workshop and I must say that it looks like they have some quality products.

Here are a few pics:

Random parts waiting for install:

I called them last week Thursday around 1pm for an enquiry regarding fitment of an UEL Header and Overpipe.

They told me to come in whenever I am available, so I got there around 3pm, left their workshop around 4pm

Overall great service delivery and work from Powerflow, I do understand that these Franchises are owned and operated by different owners, so I can only vouch for Powerflow Midrand... that their products / finishing is impressive and their willingness to help and deliver is impeccable.

(Note that it has a new manager - Not sure if that played a role),

Technician that assisted me was Chris, very knowledgeable and always in the best interest of his clients.

Summary of Install:

Borla UEL v2 Header (2.25inchs)
PLM(Private Label Manufacturing) Overpipe (2.5inchs)

Install time: Approx 45mins to 1 hour

Cost: R650 excl VAT

The Oaks also packed my old header neatly in a box and tapped it up, offered discounts on their other products and services.

Would def go back to them if I require additional work.

I actually wanted it to be loud, hence I went for the specific set-up,

On the go it sounds incredible,

The only problem I have is that on COLD START:
- I live in a complex/apartments

In addition to old people giving me stiff looks,
Car alarms go off ...which I feel guilty waking up people at 5:30am in a winters morning.

I intend getting a custom tune soon, and would like to eliminate the cold start, it does not really need to happen if you are completely cat'less, like I am.

Also note in the winter months, cats tend to find a sleeping spot in engines and under wheel arches. It happened to a relative of mine...started his engine , heard a noise, took it to the dealership - they managed to 'de-cat' it - but it was never the same
He ended up trading in the vehicle the following month.

For the quiet cold start you need to alter 3 things
Reduce the max idle values in all idle control tables to 1200 rpm
reduce the post start ignition timing to -4 from -15
reduce maf correction after start in neutral and in gear
on G roms you dont need to disable code P050B

see tune tweaks link below same deal with ecutek ecuflash or oft tune systems

Old post I know, but only read it today... is the "cold start" and related corrections not there for a reason? That reason being to help start the car smoothly and warm up the engine/fluids etc properly?

So the changes you mentioned would mean a 'slower' warm up then right?

Just asking cos my car is F$%& loud when cold.

That's probably for cold climates. You can barely call what we get "winter".

The oil and coolant take 10 minutes or so to get to full operating temp.

AFAIK the cold start routine is just to warm up the catylitic converters quickly to pass some emisions test. hence the higher rpm retarded timing and very rich mixture. heaps of people been running these quiet start mods no issues even in cold countries
