Great news...finally got to pick up my FR-S yesterday. I have only gone out on a couple of drives since acquiring it. This is going to be a weekend car, but Ive been going out the past 2 nights for random joyrides with no destination. I'm loving it. My wife calls it my late night mistress lol.

I have a few gripes, but this car is extremely satisfying. It's just plain old fun. Still trying to get used to the clutch a little, but I'm sure that will come with time. The shifter though is superb, short and crisp.

Lol. It appears that we both have great taste. I almost got convinced to go white. I saw it in person and the pearls look beautiful up close, but from a further distance it looks like plain white. Red pops all the time. I might have to refer to my car as "the red light district". Sexy.

Hi people, lurker who just registered here.

Been a fan of the 86 since it was first announced, but up until now, I've been working on my Nissan S14. Went all out on that one, with a SR20 that eventually put out ~680 hp, Vertex bodykit, fully adjustable suspension, Volk wheels and so on. Sold the engine last year and was going to put an LS1 into the car instead. 'cause while 38 PSI of boost into an inline-four engine is fun, it's not as driveable as a 5.7L V8 Bought the LS1 too, but I felt that after three rebuilds of the S14 already, I was losing interest. So now I'm selling it all, and I am very interested in a 86.

Or, I was very interested, lately, my interest has dropped a bit since I really started looking into the car. So why am I posting here? Well I'm not saying I absolutely don't want one, my heart says to buy the first one I can find. But, after reading about catastrophic engine failures on practically new cars, I have to be honest and say that I really don't like that. A car this new should not be having engine/bearing/failing issues. A 20 year old engine, fiddled with by 5 different young and inexperienced, "going fast is the only important thing"-type guys having those problems, I can accept (like the SR20 and other cheap turbo engines), but not a brand new, 2010's engine.

Plus the transmission issues (I'm talking about crunching, and synchros etc), crickets (not really a problem like the others, probably just annoying), all the CELs and what not. I should add that I would buy a used one, though with as little mileage as possible. Also, at least a 2013 model so that it has another year of warranty on it. But with my luck, the engine would blow up two days after warranty expired...

A few rattles and minor annoying things I can accept, I mean it's a budget sportscar. But catastrophic engine failures? That scares me, and is frankly a bad sign of quality.

I'm sorry for coming in here and mentioning all the bad things about the car, it's just.. You have to realize I was so set on getting one, and walked around with this warm, fuzzy feeling knowing I would probably own one soon. But now, it's like getting disappointed in a childhood hero or something.

Guess I should put my flame suit on now?

So you went looking for the problems, found them and now the car sucks?
Do more research. Those problems effect about 1% of the overall cars. Not in anyway higher than the norm for any new car. This (and any forum) will focus on the problems since this is where people look for help and should never, ever be used as a representation of what is "normal".

No no, I didn't go looking for those issues. It started with reading about an engine failure, a day or so later, someone at another forum reported their twin had suffered a blown engine, while going to work. I just started looking around the technical section here, and the Unofficial CEL-thread and got the impression that it is happening at least enough to be a known problem. Someone who has an FR-S said that he considered it to be "an alarming rate" of failures. This got me worried, and why wouldn't it?

I'm not saying every Twin will have an engine failure, I'm saying based on what I have read, it seems to happen a little too often for a new, modern car. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this really a "normal rate" of failures? Keep in mind that this forum is not at all the only source I've come across for these failures.

But I'm still optimistic about getting one, so I'm not out of here yet! I'm just tired of having car problems, which is somewhat my own fault since I have a preference for sporty Japanese cars. Three Subarus - one GC8 WRX with 350 hp, one JDM STi blobeye, one WRX hawkeye wagon with a STi engine swap. Two Nissans, the aforementioned S14 and an S13. One Honda Integra Type-R with the K20A2 swap. And that's only the Japanese cars, had a number of europeans aswell! So I've been around! My idea for the 86 was to have a solid, reliable daily driver, but at the same time use it as kind of a "project car", meaning spending some money on upgrades on it along the way. I've always had a daily apart from my Japanese cars, but I don't want that anymore..

Eh, sorry about the long winded post

It appears to me, that most major engine failures are due to people messen with the engine.

It has been my experience, that if you leave the basic engine alone (including tunes) and just mod away on the suspension, wheels, body and exhaust, you can have your upgrades ........ and have a reliable daily driver ......

Engine failures happen on new cars all the time, even the cars that I am sure you perceive as high quality (see BMW, Volvo, Honda, etc). Every single engine failure I have seen on an FRS/BRZ has been with either a 2013 model year car (stay away from that year) OR a boosted vehicle without a proper tune, cooling, and internals (don't boost without a proper tune, cooling, and internals)...Problem solved

Hello guys, My name is Aidan and have been following these forums ever since these wonderful cars came about. Now that I'll soon own one I decided to join up, so I'll probably be one of the younger ones around here (18). I'm also a third year auto electrician by trade so if I can help any one out I'd be pleased to do so.

Hello Aido ...... and WELCOME ......

Yep, we could use some more automotive electrical expertise around here.

Seems we have several folks who start messen with half of their car's lights .... then wonder why the other half don't work right .....
