I thought about doing this, but then realized probably not very many people would enjoy riding in a daily driven lowered IS300. Definitely wouldn't even think of taking the FR-S.

Pros:
  • 1099'd as individual contractor. You write off whatever you want, you can not pay a single dime in tax if you don't want to.
  • Work whenever you want. 8AM, 8PM, any day.
  • Great side gig or 2nd job without having to worry about being tied to a desk or a physical location.
  • Paid every week based on previous week's fares.
  • Great way to network with others in the area, if you are of the sociable type.
  • Busy days like Fri/Sat can net $3-500+ in a day's work.

Cons:
  • It's a taxi service.
  • It's a taxi service.
  • It's a taxi service.
  • You deal with all sorts of people, good and bad. About 80% are normal folks, 20% are the weird or drunk people.
  • If you don't like traffic or don't like to interact with others, this is not the job for you.
  • You will put miles on your car, whether it's new or used.

Having said all that, I wish I did this earlier. So far my plan is to spend 25% of my income, save 25% of it in stocks, use 25% to pay off outstanding debt such as my car payments, and remaining 25% is saved to cover the taxes and operating expenses.

If you do it right, 2-3 nights a week can net an extra $10-20k per year.

1) I have a very good sense of direction and rarely rely on the map. And even if I do, I'm not glued to the screen unlike the writer
2) In LA, Uber has a fare guarantee that is anywhere from $16 - $28 per hour guaranteed. I end up with around $20-25/hr on average.
3) If you want to do this as a full-time job, don't. As a part time job, it's worth every second of my time invested so far.

An example: tonight I drove about 4 hours after work. Net fares was around... ~$80. I put roughly 60 miles on my car and paid about $6 in gas. This is enough money to cover my gas money to/from Laguna Seca this weekend for 86 Cup. Counting last week's fares, I am running this weekend for free.

At the end of the day, it all depends on your goal(s) and what you are going to work for. I am able to drive around, listen to my own music, and get paid.

In Australia Uber is still somewhat in a legal grey area. Because one is taking money there becomes a duty of care issue, drivers are not insured for accidents to paying passengers. From the little I have read of it might not be legal here.
