Yeah, when the car is off after driving it for a while it makes a knocking noise every couple minutes or so. Like the sound of a single hammer tap. I'm assuming this is the cooling of the metals. But it will also sometimes make the same noise when I'm idling.

It seems that many people believe that using as low as 91 octane is just fine. There's an ethanol free station by my work but they only offer up to 90 octane. I just filled up with the 90 octane ethanol free to give it a try and my car is sooooo much quieter during idle. As far as I can tell from my butt dyno there is no loss in performance either.

Should I just be safe and continue to use the 92 octane gas at shell and try to ignore the crickets? Or would it be ok to use the 90 octane ethanol free? The ethanol free would also cost me about $25 more a month. The crickets really don't bother me that much but it's so nice to have silence while at a stop light...

89, 91..whatever ...etc fine. Just make sure you dont mind crickets or other issues arising sooner or later.

Just use premium (93?). I've had no issues besides seeming harder to accelerate using cheapest gas (Arco and Shell 89's). I use Chevron premium otherwise.

Maybe its me because i'm fat?

Ethanol sucks @ss. I ran 89, 20%???? ethanol on my 90 pickup and that made it develop some sort of cricket! Ran higher medium, no problems.

So i got this from the Toyota Japan site, maybe this will end the debate, or spark more... You can use regular it seems.

Have to be careful when using materials from other regions of the world. What they call "regular" may well be our 91 (I am too lazy to check). I don't know how there can be any debate on this subject anyway as the manual is clear that 93 is recommended (as in it is better but not needed) but a minimum of 91 is required (as in don't go lower). There is no grey area here and that is about as clear as anybody could make it.

Just follow what the book (or your specific tune) says to follow. So in this case, at least 91 (or its equivalent).

I'm curious if anyone else here runs 100% gasoline?

The station I use has 100% pure gas in 87 and 93 octanes, and an 87 blend.

I've been using the 93, of course, and have been impressed with the mileage - I've been averaging 33mpgs!!

We can get 91, anything above that (93/94) is E10.
