I just wanna know if that's odd or something.
5th and 6th are overdrive gears in the AT, usually best to downshift when trying to accelerate onto a freeway

Here's a youtube vid: bolt ons auto vs stock manual. no launch. Im not sure how you can say acceleration is the same when every mag test of these cars has the manual destroying the auto in 0-60 and 1/4 mile. If the manual car in this vid had the same mods... goodnight.

quick google search of the auto box reviews:

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...tomatic-review

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...ic_first_test/

http://jalopnik.com/so-how-do-we-lik...-brz-563872303

average manual shift time is 0.4 sec according to a road and track article, and with a no-lift-shift software it would be right there or better than the auto.

as for resale. take a look at the m3 market. the manual coupe cars go for more than the SMG (auto) convertibles (despite those options being more costly). By far a majority of people that want this car want a manual.
What are the bolt ons on that FR-S auto? I bet it made an extra 5whp and also it could be a bit of driver error on the auto FR-S part. Also if you look at the first link you provided the auto had a 5-60 mph of 7.9 which is better than the FR-S 5-60 they tested earlier in the same mag with a manual. An FR-S manuals launch is responsible for 1.5-1.7 seconds of the 0-60.

The difference in the 5-60 speeds, assuming there is one (in my opinion) is because the AT can reach 60 at the top of 2nd gear but the MT requires a shift to 3rd.

I still believe that had Toyota/Subaru chosen to get the AT launch control it would match or beat the MT on 0-60.

Loving the AT on this car! I am so happy with my choice. Only complaint I have so far is that putting in an aftermarket crank pulley has been a pain with no luck so far. Tried to have the dealer install it and they didn't even think they could do it!!!

I love it. But I would love to experience the manual though it would probably be killer in traffic or be a pain in certain situations like when your with your woman.

I have the IS-F and I heard they used the same transmission in the FR-S? To achieve the same lighting quick shifts. Feels the same to be honest.

Yes a truly great A/T - very responsive in Paddle Shift mode and rev matching on the downshifts sound beastly with a loud exhaust.

I put in a few hours with the AT from a friend and at the dealer before I got my MT and was thoroughly impressed with the full-manual mode. Being able to shift into first is really, really nice when you are hooning around in empty parking lots and sliding around. If I didn't have another car with a slushbox in it, I would have gotten an AT in this.

It cracks me up seeing people with the MT bash on the AT when the vast majority of people who buy the MT aren't shifting nearly as fast as the AT and certainly aren't heel-toeing anywhere close to what the AT can do. 95% of the people bashing the AT would get spanked by someone with the same skill level in an AT FR-S on a road course or autox. I don't know very many people at all who can heel-toe very high up in the powerband and rev-match perfectly while still maintaining the same level of finesse on the brake they would have if they weren't shifting...

Then again, those who are good enough to out-shift an AT entering corners have serious track/auto-x seat time and most likely actually have respect for the twins' ATs since they are quite good.

So what you can't clutch kick in AT? I had zero problems flicking the ass out and going for a slide - if you can't have fun in the AT FR-S you are doing something very, very wrong!

I've test driven an FR-S with the A/T twice. Despite me owning a MT, the AT is really nice in these cars. The AT sure can downshift better than I can!

If you want most performance...

if you want the most performance buy a manual.. simple as that.

The auto
1) can't launch
2) has taller gearing for gas mileage and so acceleration is worse
3) does not shift as quickly
4) you can't clutch kick
5) weighs more
6) resale value will likely suffer.
If you want most performance, you'll be upgrading. With Manual, it will be clutch upgrades, with AT it will be torque converter, valve job...

Depends what you're doing as to which will be the better performer in the end. Either one can be a better performer and a trans swap is in the works eventually if you are really going for performance.

Ehhh just put 4.56 gears in it and it will wake this car up with an auto

It can depend on the RPM that they both were at during the video. In other words if one is at a different rpm they would have an advantage. I am also not sure if the drivers weighed the same or the gas tank was full or empty, tire pressure, or if they purchased the gas from the same station

From my experience a stock manual vs a stock auto, the manual will kill the auto in the 0-60 and 1/8 or 1/4 mile. WHen you launched the car (manual) say 5500 rpm or leave off idle or whatever in the auto, the auto doesn't stand a chance. However, the manual won't last very long when launching aggressively.

Valid point, I guess neither car is really a 1/4 mile car in any case
