I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but since it could affect all of us in America and specifically has to do with us working on our own BRZ's and FRS's.. I'm putting it here. If I'm wrong MODS can feel free to move it.
![]() http://www.autoblog.com/2015/05/08/g...usaolp00000595 In summary, because of the Digital Millennium Copyrights Act passed in 1998, "...every 3 years the Copyright Office holds hearings to determine whether exemptions are warranty as technology advances." Because all of our cars are now running on multiple ECU's and aren't mechanical devices anymore, companies like GM and John Deere think that "...they don't actually buy a car, but they merely buy a license to use the car for the duration of its life"... This statement by itself makes me despise GM and John Deere. Anyway, they are worried that "...unauthorized modifications could lead to malfunctions and car accidents." ![]() Not only would this affect people working on their own cars, but they could also determine WHO works on your car, so you not only lose your right to work on your own car, but you lose the right to determine who you want to work on your car... At the end of the article a guy named Drayton Green summed up his thoughts and said, "This has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard," he wrote to the Copyright Office. "I can't believe this is even a discussion. If I purchase a car, I own it. The freedom to do whatever I want to it is provided by my constitutional rights. Simple as that." I agree with this guy completely!! I encourage everyone to read it in case you need to speak your voice later down the road.. I had no idea this was even going on until this morning. |

Repost, sorry dude:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87043 It would likely only apply to cars made after the amendments are passed, even if they are, so we're safe. |

Doesn't matter really as you will probably get responses anyway and if nobody is interested the thread will just fade away into oblivion of it's own accord. Reposts used to bug me but when you see they still get responses than you start to understand there is value to them.

I thought it was going to be a thread about a new Jeopardy category.
"I'll take 'Working on your BRZ' for 1,000." The answer: The High Pressure Fuel Pump will often cause this sound. "What are crickets? Alex."

Wait until the auto companies start selling freemium cars - you can unlock new maps for a few bucks. Or, buy a 2015-2016 season pass and get a couple mods thrown in as well.

This seems to be paving the way for self-driving cars. Having the car companies own the car would mean the company is at fault if a self-driving car causes an accident.
National Pubic Radio here in the states had a interview with a guy about self driving cars. Basically, the technology is coming in and the insurance companies will force it on people. At my age it won't be so bad; I've had my fun. The idea of tottering to my self driving car when I'm 75, collapsing into the backs seats of my comfy sedan, croaking out "Heart Attack!!" "Hospital!!" holds a certain appeal. The car driving automatically with everything interconnected through wireless means a "Brave New World." Hospital will know I'm coming and the traffic will be adjusted for a fast journey. How they deal with people who want to drive on their own is probably high insurance premiums. Phase out cars you can drive yourself. You young guys might want to take real good care of your FRS/BRZ |
