Imho if it MAY slip through 85% cases, it's good enough. For those less lucky 15% there is option of bolting back stock one.
I have no clue how really tests are performed and how thorough they are over in CA though, hence just an mad idea. But if it will work .. replacing just frontpipe should be easier then regular remounting of headers, no?

For lulz. If catback is legal, so do probably this.

The visual inspections are quite thorough, and if theres a question about somethings legality - its almost certainly going to fail the test. Any type of modification throws up red flags, and since the state routinely modifies cars, and then sends them through as an undercover car, licenses are on the line for both tech and station. Only takes one mistake to cost them big...so they tend to be hyper critical. That said, the test for our cars is mainly visual, and relies heavily on the cars computer to pass or fail its self tests. So if modifications were made, and made in such a way that the computer is tricked into thinking the set up is still stock and in working order, and the inspector is dating your sister (or something along those lines), then you have a shot at passing. Otherwise....keep those stock parts for smog time!!!!

If you buy a new car from out of state, you smog when you bring the car in, and the normal 6 year exemption period applies for all cars less than 6 model years old.

Just like DUI check points, they are voluntary. As persuasive as cali law enforcement can be, you do not have to take the roadside smog tests.

Thise have been around awhile. I saw one once awhile ago, but they were meant for targeting old clunkers and such. I would't even worry about it.

It almost seems that future CA-legal performance upgrades for twins will lay only with forced induction only, such as with few SC kits like this or Cossworth's, NA/headers/tune path will slowly close.

I understand this is still illegal.

However, it will have more chance to pass visual inspections @CA.

The smoke test is a visual inspection for visible smoke in the exhaust. If theres smoke in the exhaust the catalyst is the least of your worries - your looking at at least valve stem seals, if not rings, engine etc with smoke. As for that header / cat setup your looking at, it will fail a California smog inspection - Available with 48 state legal cats or non-catted (CA is not one of those 48 states lol). Smog techs in CA will be looking at the catalyst, they will notice it is aftermarket right away, and they will notice it does NOT have the CA required info on the catalyst.....namely an Executive Order number that shows it is a legal replacement. If you buy it, save the OE one.....you'll need it in a couple years, or if you sell the car.

+90 crank hp @12psi keeping both cats. Comes out to around 250whp, not bad

Thanks for the shoutout @plynnjr92. We actually offer two CARB-compliant turbo kits: our Stage 1 kit, which boosts to ~7psi, and our Stage 2, which adds an air-to-liquid intercooler and boosts to ~12psi.
