When I first heard the engine in person back in 2012, I loved it.

Probably because I was driving a Corolla & Prius back then.

Those 2 things are exactly what I disagreed with in his review, but everything else was spot on.

The sound thing really makes revving the engine out less enjoyable.

The TRD exhaust never ceases to surprise me. I will never grow tired of it.

Meet last weekend with a shitload of really well done cars and I had a bunch of people ask to hear the TRD exhaust on my humble little near stock car. They all said they liked it.

That comment section is quite the good circle jerk.

He's right about the enthusiasts. They are a thankless bunch.

edit: I'm an example. If were to sit down and pencil out my ideal sports car it would be right along the lines of the ND Miata, yet the Miata exists and I still don't want it. This is another example of why focus groups don't always work. What people say they want and what they actually want are often not the same.

2nd edit: I would enjoy owning the ND Miata, I just don't want it enough to pay that much for it. All previous generations of Miata still do not want.

Actually sort of got the root of issue in the second edit. Enthusiasts will tell you exactly what they want but when it shows up they say "Why so much money. They are just ripping us off"

The real answer is that they never had the money in the first place.

The ND is something I want but at the same time it's Rosalyn and what I really want is a Juliet. I don't just want a good car, I want it to stir my soul. Something I want even though I shouldn't, something that causes way more trouble than it's worth and costs way more money than it could ever justify.

On paper, in interviews.. we all ask for Rosalyns but when it shows up on the showroom floor we're disappointed it's not a Juliet.

I think the FRS is somewhere in between the two and for me that's really what I wanted and didn't know until it existed.

Sometimes I don't understand why people are complaining about the sound. At least it doesn't sound like a friggin' lawn mower i.e. new BMW M3.

I have an STI Performance exhaust on mine and it sounds amazing from startup to redline to the rev-matched downshifts.

Sometimes reading about the twins on North American blog sites reminds me why I rather read Japanese blog sites with Google translate instead. Most people just don't get it here.

Amen. UEL header just sounds like a fouled plug. Pass.

New M3 sounds like a touring car with a nice exhaust

I had the pleasure of having one running while I was marshalling at auto x last weekend, it sounded so good.

I think it can sound quite well if you get other portions of the exhaust correct as well. But some just sound like a crazy missfire.
