This article is in one way or another the antipode to the Evo mag review from a few weeks ago IMHO.

I looked up the definition of "antipode" and got this:

" Australia and Great Britain occupy antipodal regions."
How is that for irony?

If you're restricted to iPad just save the pictures first and then view them from the photo album.

Not really, because Evo reviewed a BRZ, Wheels an 86. In a more recent review Evo gave the 86 a 4 out of 5 rating, they actually liked it. It appears the handling differences may be greater between the twins than some around here like to acknowledge (it's called cognitive dissonance).

Of course Evo while highly regarded is only one data source. Looking forward to other comparos, like Inside Line's.

Sound? I'll still take the Carrera GT thanks, there's a more electrifying quality to its scream, but the LFA is a close second.

EVO tested a BRZ AT vs. other vehicles with MT. The updated review with the 86 appears to backpedal a bit and try to justify the big differences in ratings between the BRZ and 86, which, according to all other reviews is very little.

You can rationalize it anyway you want, but the fact is their main complaints (other than the lack of power) about the BRZ had to do with the handling characteristics, not the auto tranny. They found that the 86 did not suffer from these same handling characteristics, and preferred those of the 86 - simple as that. Imputing motives about "backpedaling" etc is silly, Evo is not C&D or Motor Trend, they don't pull punches.

There has been no direct comparision yet published of the 2 reviewed side-by-side at the same time and by the same people, Evo's 2 reviews taken together are the closest to date. Other review sites have used different testers testing several weeks or months apart under very different conditions, making accurate comparison impossible.

Actually their main complaint was the lack of power. I collected all the relevant quotes in the thread that is *about* the EVO review so I won't drudge it up here.

Handling characteristics are, in part, affected by what kind of power you can put to the floor during a corner - this would be the *only* possible explanation for the widely varying characteristics between the EVO review of the BRZ and FRS. The tiny bit of difference they dial into the BRZ does not explain such a drastic difference.

Evo pulls punches all the time, and they also make controversial statements to sell mags, like every other publication.

I agree that Insideline will be a better comparison (especially considering they are both MT).

Hahaha, I don't find it surprising that the 'engine note' is being discussed after this article, amongst the club members.

As for the FR-S, it really is one of the only things Toyota missed the mark on when it came to this car. I remember thumbing through the thread on club4 back in 2006 when Moto asked us what we wanted from an AE86 successor, and "something that sounds like a 4A-GE" came up quite a bit.

Yamaha has been with Toyota on quite a few sports engines (4A, 1JZ, 2ZZ, to list only a few) and its what gives those engines such a beautiful roar when its at full blaze.

As for the F20 vs. 4A-GE in terms of note? Well....I'm biased. But I will admit, the F20 sounds absolutely amazing as well.

Too much power, can't wind it up on public roads, too expensive for what it is, and too much to maintain for not using all the power anyway. The FR-S is exactly what the sports car segment needs - a reasonable power band for the street which you can wind up and test the limits of in a safe way on public roads.

Lucky for me the depreciation on those Cayman's is very good.

86fanatic : I think this is what I needed to hear!

Yesterday I was about to order the '13 Porsche 981 for an August delivery and my chest was getting really tight at the thought of dropping $7-,--- on a car.
In fact I was feeling that tightness day and night for the last week just thinking about it!
And the fact that it would be parked in an open parking lot at an elementary school made me verklempt too!
Plus I learned recently the Porsches just love to eat tires, brake pads and disks even for conservative drivers!

To think I can have the FR-S at 1/2 the price AND a used Miata for @ $12,ooo to get some open air driving in and $30,ooo left in the bank for whatever- my chest pains went away almost instantly!!!
