BRZ tint = 75% from the factory

Couldn't readily identify a topic that discussed this specifically, so...

I'm going to be getting window tint and wanted to get a baseline, so I stopped by the local PD and had them throw a meter on the window. Read dead-on 75%. Talked at length with a really cool local officer about tint, and he guessed that throwing 50% onto these windows would bring the overall VLT down to around 40%. He said that window tint is much like speeding, and there's a certain amount of excess that's generally permitted, around 5% or so (and there's a +- 2% on the meters themselves). The key point he made was that it's a question of what's reasonable. In my case, if I but 50% on like I'm planning, he said he'd never cite me for it because that's reasonable even though the overall VLT would read at an illegal level.

Edit: the above relates specifically to Ohio law (50% front, 35% rear).

Side note, the officer was very appreciative of the fact that I sought out the PD for help and advice.

50% is not even worth doing IMO, it's too light. I have 30% all around on my car and it's "see-through" in direct sunlight, and decent at night. When I get a BRZ I will do 20% all around. I've also spoke with different officers about this matter. Most laid it out very plainly, it's just something that they (can) pull you over for, but usually don't. However, you will usually be cited for it if you're pulled over for something else and they notice it. Funny enough, I was pulled a couple of months ago for 80 in a 65, and did not receive a citation for the tint. I lawyered up and had to pay a $55 fine to the court after the DA lowered my 4pt fine down to a non-moving equipment violation. Yay clean driving record.

This is a picture from a couple of years ago, but will show you what 30% looks like. Direct sunlight, 30% tint all around (with windshield eyebrow): http://i.imgur.com/7M3X2.jpg

I ran 35% on my Altima for years, finally decided to I wanted 20% and my friends shop hooked me up, I know as soon as I say this I'll get pulled over and ticketed.. But haven't been pulled over since I went down. Told him the color and car I was getting and how it'll draw attention and asked should I just do 35? And he smirked and said we both know you will be doing 20 hahaha. TN law is 35%

Makes me wish I did 20, 35% is too light for me on this car.

FR-S New Car Features book lists the glass as 75% for windshield and 70% for all other glass.

Jeff
That's interesting, because having any tint on the windshield below something like 6" down from the roof line is illegal. Comparatively, my BRZ windshield looks clear save for the 1"-2" tint at the top, while the rear window appears no darker than the side windows (but if the former is 70% and the latter are 75% I doubt I could tell anyway).

Edit: I just noticed your location, so maybe windshield tint is legal up north.

Most factory glass has a tint in the glass, even windshields. What is illegal is adding additional tint.

The numbers I gave are for Canada and USA, and are similar for most vehicles.

Don't know their accuracy
http://www.tintlaws.com/laws/OH/

5in down from top of windshield
50% driver and passenger
From there back anything goes

There are medical exemptions. Guess you get that from an ophthalmologist.
Someone with experience should comment on that.

In Australia u are not allowed to go any darker/lower than 40%....

I had 20% on my sides and 5% on my back window but i had a Holden SS ute so the rear window was right behind my head so u could still see through at night.... I dont know if the rear

window has a limit in Australia.. It could just be side windows and no tint on windshield??

For my 86 ill go 10% all around... Until i get pulled over or start running illegal engine mods... Then pull it off and run just a clear tint.... I wont be looking for any unwanted attention once the turbo goes in.....

I used to run double 5% limo tint on my old Civic...you couldn't see in with your face pressed against the glass, that was fun but also dangerous in the dark.

I had 20% all around on the next Civic. Even that was too dark when there is little or no outside lighting. Backing up was a adventure in faith.

Keep this in mind if you live in an area with poor lighting.

"This section of the code also exempts vehicles registered in the name of an individual, their parent or guardian, or their spouse, who have a signed affidavit from a physician or optometrist licensed to practice in the state of Ohio which states that the person has a medical condition requiring sunscreen that is reflective and/or allows less light to pass through than the law allows. In order to be exempt under this exception, you must have the affidavit in your possession while riding in and /or driving the vehicle." (http://windowtintlaws.org/)

Dude? Really? First post is to resurrect something dead for many years? Not that the info you provided isn't of some value but...
