There's a simple rough way to calculate this....
The highest horsepower per liter on a production car is just shy of 130hp. Let's assume we can't upgrade enough to out engineer Ferrari or the like. Switching to e85 could net 10% on top of that and let's see would punch the engine up to 2.2 liters without compromising it too much. That puts us at around 315hp at the crank, assuming you build something slightly below a race engine. |

There is a guy in Aus that has taken a BEAMS 3SGE to 340 crank HP on E85 (still 2.0L). I mention a bit of what he's done to get there in the BEAMS swap thread.
Look up 'RA45 Celica BEAMS' to see what the guy's done to get there. Neither cheap nor easy.

No real way to get 350-400hp out of the fa20. And even if you were somehow able to, it would likely be pretty unreliable. On top of that if you were going to go the na route you'd likely be forced to make a lot of custom parts as they don't yet exist for our car. Boosting would likely be the easier route. Most people seem to be happy with 300hp from this car though.

swap vs boosting, hmm? $$$ could be pretty close. if you had to keep if FA20 NA, it would take a hell of a lot of money to get it to 350. different Fuel and under the right Atmospheric conditions 300hp can be done. 350whp is a whole different story.. maybe in another Planet?

I build carbed rotaries. My last engine build saw over 30k street miles, 20+ autoXs, 4 dyno sessions, managed to average 21MPG, and after 3 years under my hood it has been running in a friends car since 2012. I have no idea how hard he is on it. I'll build you a 13B if you're interested, but you've got to figure out how to shoehorn it into your 86. LOL

Also, that engine build was all stock ports with no porting. To this day, I believe no one has made more power on a -hybrid or not- stock port 13B.

How does one increase a rotary's specific output without porting? I thought porting was all there was available (excluding fi). Over here porting refers to any port work. Maybe over there porting might only refer to bridge and/or peripheral. (Such a rarity now days to hear a ported car with the engine mad hunting at 2k idle)
