When he says "a real spare" what does he mean? The fact that there is one at all (as opposed to run flats all around like the miata) or does he mean it is actually full size? (which I can't imagine is the case)

My civic has a mini spare, which is pretty obnoxious considering if you blow a front tire, you have to swap a rear one to the front, and put the spare on the rear or risk damaging your lsd.

Usually they mean it's a full diameter spare (so same overall width) even if the profile is a lot skinnier. As opposed to a space saver (donut) that's a lot smaller.

Subaru can't use different sized wheels because of the AWD so SOP for them.

When I looked at it, I didn't measure but it sure looked the same size as the other wheels overall.

IMHO the real spare is refering to the fact that it does not have a fix a flat kit instead of a spare. I am a little surprised by this also. I sold SmartCars for a while and they have no spare (it wouldn't fit in the RR configuration) and so they had a mini compressor and flat filler in the rear if you got a flat. It worked great and many of my customers bought extras to put in their other cars to save weight and improve MPG (CO people are crazy about being green).

You are 100% right. There is a high chance that you will need to replace the tpms sensor also if you use the slime. That is why you have the tire repair kit. Most of the time you can patch a tire on the road in 5-10 mins and use the compressor to fill it. If for some reason you cant then the slime is the last ditch option.

Honestly I am 26 and knock on wood but I have never had a flat tire. I took the spare out of my rsx and drove that for 9 years with out an issue and now my miata does not have one either and so for so good I have not had an issue with that yet either.

Last year when I had my cobalt SS I hit a brake pad on the road and shredded my 2 day old KDW2... I had only just put my spare back in the car to make sure there wasn't any problems/defects in the tires.
